There are some Christians who have nothing to do with any modern music... even contemporary Christian music. Is there any biblical evidence to support such beliefs?

Christians understand that this earthly llife is really a preparation for eternal life in the kingdom of heaven. The focus of this preparation is the mind. It is through the mind that God communicates with us and impresses us for the development of a Christlike character. But Satan tries to work through the body to control the mind. Anything that elevates the mind, inspires reverence and love for God and promotes physical well being in harmony with God's word is acceptable for a Christian. Some modern music with its emphasis on rhythm bypasses the higher faculties of the mind and stimulates the physical senses. The more often a person is controlled or stimulated by feelings, emotions or the senses, the less willingness to study God's word and the less defense against temptations aimed at the body.

Does the music leave you with a clearer understanding of God ? Does it increse your love for Him ? Are you inspired to serve Him with your whole heart after listening to it ? Can you picture Jesus and the holy angels better ? Does your body like it more than your mind ? Is your mind involved when you are listening to it ?

Biblical answer: Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Philippians 2:5

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8

I think honestly a lot of it has to do with tradition. They have always done things a certain way and always sang old Bible songs, etc. I've been in churches where this very thing happened. They seemed to think that any and all modern music must not be Christian, but I guess from the devil. They evidentally haven't ever heard any contemporary Christian music. It talks straight to the heart and is just as good in getting the message to the lost as the older hymns.

I just came from a church where most of their music was contemporary and the older people complained because it was, "too loud". My thinking was that they need to get past that because they are making that a hindrance in their walk with the Lord. They wouldn't therefore sing the songs because they felt they were too much for them and not their style. In my opinion, it shouldn't matter what Christian song we are singing whether old or new, we need to be singing to glorify the Lord and not ourselves or anyone else for that matter.

I haven't found any biblical evidence to support people's opinions on this matter. However, I have encountered several people who argue over such things.

Because modern music is pretty much all about sex and drugs. You can't even get past an Air Supply song without hearing about some kind of fornication. Some of you might think Neil Diamond is for old people, but I had to listen to it as a child (my parents were fans), and you won't believe how much fornication is in his songs! And I haven't even touched the genres that are OBVIOUSLY sexual....
The Bible says, "I will set no evil thing before my eyes." I assume that means before your ears, too. A Christian should do his best to avert his attention from sinful things. If he's watching TV and a sex scene comes on, he should turn off the TV or leave the room. You should imagine Jesus sitting next to you in everything you do. If you would be embarrassed for Jesus to see/hear what you are, then you shouldn't do it. If you need to send your children out of the room, then you shouldn't be watching it, either.

It depends on what the music is. There is some very good modern music and there is some very bad. I personally know from fact because of an eyewitness, some music is accompanied by black Masses at the recordings. Very scary stuff really. But, I love Creed and I love the Los Lonely Boys (I think that's how you say it) and there are more too

There is absolutely no biblical evidence to support this belief. To most people it's a personal preference. For people who tell you that chrisian contemporary is of the devil or wrong, they are living under the veil of a religious spirit and need deliverance. If God only used Southern Gospel and Hymns for his glory, most of us younger generation would never live under that style of music. I know that I don't. Religious people (like the pharisees in the bible) like to put God in a box. The truth is that His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. He will use any style of music to reach a generation for His Glory!

I have not ever seen anything in the Bible.
However, there are some people who believe "christian" music should be one way and no other.
They do not see that "newer" christian music draws more people to listen and hear.
I think that music about drugs, fighting and gangs, etc is unacceptable but that is my belief.
I think music of all kinds is art and should be heard.
But I have to say, you rais a good question.
We should all expand our minds with music.

No; they're just frightened of anything that seems "worldly" or maybe just don't like it.
I used to belong to a church where nothing was allowed but organ music...which is silly because there were no organs in the Bible!
It's just legalism, man's tradition added onto the Word. I'm sure Jesus appreciates all the praises we give, in whatever medium.

What I was taught by my Christian parents was to "Be in the world and not of it." This means not to support other peoples beliefs by buying their music, watching their movies, TV shows etc. They are afraid the music will pollute their fragile minds and make them turn away from Christ. Shows how powerful their "god" is. Its the Christians who try to ban secular artists that offend them that really pisses me off. What right do they have to choose what music is sold in America? They have done plenty of damage you just dont hear about it on the news. I went to a Christian website and they had a list of all the "trashy" T.V. shows they were able to hurt by threatening to boycott the companies that ran commercials during those shows. The love of Christ is great ain't it?

I actually used to know some people who didn't like "secular" music is what its called. The way they explained it to me was, kind of like what the other guy said. How God and Satan can inspire music and things, it's like you just got to be careful what you're listening to because it makes it easy for unGodly things to get into your head. Heavy believers want to be as close to God as possible so I guess its like a safeguard. Almost like you are what you eat......

i don't think it's a matter of beliefs, really. i think it's just a matter of musical taste and preference. the older folks (myself included) seem to prefer more traditional styles rather than contemporary music. to each his own.
