It's pretty obvious what makes us different from the other animals. This should not be a deep philosophical debate that never gets solved.
Yeah, sure, Humans have the potential of being real morons and doing really ignorant things, but that makes us no less advanced beyond the other animals.
It's like with vehicles. You take a fuel efficient, non pollutant, health promoting green bicycle and compare it to a brand new Cadillac. There is clearly a difference. Although they both classify as land vehicles, the Caddie is clearly more advanced than the bike and deserves to be classified differently. The End. Is the car BETTER??? Well, it's certainly more versatile. Some may even say too versatile. But potentially dangerous or not, if handled properly a car can be totally harmless and far more beneficial than any ol' bike.
There is such a thing as being too philosophical...

"What is the Difference between an Animal & a Human?"
They don't ask this question.
OK, I know that might class as non-human some beings that are genetically considered human, but it's very difficult to come up with a divide that doesn't either catch some of homo sapiens as not really human, or allow some animals in as truly sentient.
I've known parrots that showed more signs of living, self aware intelligence than certain human beings operating seemingly on nothing more than pure reflex and instinct.

There is no difference, other than the WRITTEN word. Animals communicate, and animals are also self aware (this was recently in the news regarding elephants.) Monkeys and Dolphins both have sex only for pleasure. Any many primates have opposable thumbs... (do people really know that little about the animal world??)
Humans ARE animals!! We simply have the ability to not act on our instincts - but the vast majority of us act on them anyway. Just ask Teddy Haggard

God gave us intelligence. Yes, I know not all of us use it, but we have it.
God gave us dominion over the animals, which will be returned to us in the new earth
Gen 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
Isa 11:6 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.
2Pe 3:13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

GOD created both. There is no "mother nature". Here is the big difference between animals and humans:
Humans were created in the image of God.
Animals were not.
Does this mean that humans ARE God? No. Are we even close to becoming God? No! But God created us in His image.
Genesis 1:27 (NIV)
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
The Hebrew word there translated "image" is "tselem". It means to shade; a phantom. Figuratively, it means an "illusion", or resemblance. We are not God. But He loved us so much that He created us in His likeness. That is the major difference. Hope this helps, God bless!

There is a big difference. We are made in God's image and we humans are capable of having a relationship with the living God. We have a spiritual nature, which is dead in sin and revived when we accept the savior Jesus. Then we have new spiritual life with the God of heaven and earth. Animals do not have this ability. They are only made for our use.

Gen 1:24 And God went on to say: “Let the earth put forth living souls according to their kinds, domestic animal and moving animal and wild beast of the earth according to its kind.” And it came to be so.
>Animals are souls.
Gen 2:7 And Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul.
>Man became a soul.
>Soul means "breather"
Eccl 3:18 I, even I, have said in my heart with regard to the sons of mankind that the [true] God is going to select them, that they may see that they themselves are beasts. 19 For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit, so that there is no superiority of the man over the beast, for everything is vanity.
>Man and animals have the same spirit, and each die.
The difference is that Man was created in Jehovah's image, with the ability to love, to have power over creation, to exercise wisdom, and to understand justice.
Man also can choose to worship Jehovah

There is little physical difference between the human body and
an animals body, they are both machines designed for this
environment. The only real difference is that the human body
contains the human who dwells inside during this experience.

They cannot distinguish right from wrong humans can. They act on instinct. Most of them are cover in fur we are not. We have the capacity to speak a language and call each other by each other's names the only other animal that can do that is dolphins.

Communication and Opposable thumbs come down to being the roots of what has made man different from animals. Teaching of language and sharing of ideas brought civilization to what it is today.
