The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (referred to as CVPI from here on out) is actually a very dangerous car and is known for lighting off after being rear ended. The CVPI is being phased out for cars like the Dodge Hemi Charger, Impala Police Package, LT1 Camaro, Chevy Tahoe w/ Corvette LT1 engine and the Surburban. Regular police cars are not "regular" cars, we run beefier suspension and brakes, as well as more powerful computer controlled engines like the LT1 Corvette motor, we also run better tires as well. CVPI is just one type of car.

Years ago car companies built different types of police packages for different types of police work. Police cars used in cities had smaller, more fuel efficient engines while highway patrol cars had bigger, more powerful engines. The term police interceptor was originally used by Ford to describe its highway patrol model in the late 50's and resurrected it in the early 90's to describe its police package car. I'm afraid that its just a nameplate on the back now. However there are differences between them and civilian models.
I don't agree with the guy who says that the Crown Vics have a tendency to catch fire when hit in the back. Its a bad rap that isn't really true now. Initially where was a problem but they changed the design in 1998 and recalled older model cars to make some changes to make them safer. Now they are no more likely to catch fire than any other car hit at 70 mph in the rear.
