The weather is colder in the fall/winter, wouldn't you think that we need a thicker coat for that season?

The only reason that your hair would shed is if you are not keeping it moisturized and greased properly. Your hair is just like your skin, if you don't keep it moisturized it will start to dry up. I used to have that problem and now that I grease my hair at least once or twice a week with a light grease and make sure that I keep a hair moisturizer around I no longer have that problem.

I have never had this happen. However I can't keep long nails in the winter. The cold makes them snap all the time.

Maybe your hair is getting dry and breaking. Do you wear a hat or toboggen? That could make your hair break. Also, if it is long it may be breaking from getting caught under your coat.

Another factor could be central heat. This is a very dry heat that sucks the moisture out of the air in a house. It is easily fixed by using a humidifier or throwing a damp towel over part of the return at night. I have to do this or my throat and mouth get extremely dry, so maybe it would also affect your hair.

I have recently gone through a massive hair loss. For a woman it's really alarming when your hair comes out in clumps.
I consulted my stylist and my doctor and between them they cannot come up with the answer.
I got tested for everything, including cancer - that one is still up in the air.
My stylist and nutritionist say that we all shed and sometimes it just all falls out at once, so the dormant hair follicles can start working. Well, I'm not so sure - I used to have twice as much hair as I have now.
On one hand - great, as I used to have way too much of it and styling was a b**ch, but on the other - boy, why is it falling out all of a sudden?
So here are the possible reasons I had presented to me:
seasonal shedding - most common
diabetes
arthritis (got tested for this one too - miss)
ovarian cysts - got those, waiting for treatment
foreign cells in uterus - hair loss and deflected pain - you feel pain in some unrelated area of your body, and the worst is - it doesn't show on ultrasound or MRI.
cancer - mostly of the gastro-intestinal tract.

Not to scare you, but if you're shedding more than you think you should, load up on vitamins and minerals.
If that doesn't help, go see your MD, because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

no every one do not go through a seasonal hair shed in the fall/winter months because some people thought that by long hairs in winter make the head warm which keeps us from cold

Well my dogs shed regularly. Yes, shedding is a seasonal thing, though this does not exclude other possibilities of some allergy or sickness. He might be allergic to some of the foods he is taking, as individual dogs seem to have different allergies to different foods. My dogs love to eat fish, but this really causes them to start shedding their hair. Dont feed them chocolates as this is posoin to them.

from what i've noticed, my hair has been thinning out since I was about 25, I'm 31 now and the strangest thing is that my hair is growing back in as either gray or solid black. and new growth is giving my hairline on my forehead lower...so bazaare ! I'm naturally light brown ....so I think that your hair is probably doing whatever is going on in your body.

I have experienced it. It is because the cold, dry air dries out the hair and causes breakage. Use a good conditioner, drink plenty of water, and try a light moisturizer. :)
