It sounds like you're importing a video file that has muxed audio/video. This means that the audio and video are combined and not in separate channels. You'll need to find software to unmux it first, which can be a real challenge (on Windows or Mac). ffmpegX is a good free app for Macs that can do a lot of video conversion. You may at least be able to try and have it rip out the audio only and then you can import your video and audio into iMove and sync them up.

Muxed videos are an ongoing problem and I wish people just wouldn't make them at all.

If this is not the case then the video may have its audio in some odd codec format that iMovie can't support. Some people like to use these obscure formats and that causes issues when editing the video later.

I'm not a Mac user but just out of curiosity, what is the source? Is it a file you downloaded off the web? or was it something that you ripped off of a DVD? I would imagine the audio codec is not installed on your Mac. (if there is such thing on the mac).

Have you tried another file and see if the sounds comes on? Just to see if it's hardware or software issue.

... I thought Mac's makes things easy. :)
