they are just checking things out and if you have a male dog he will be covering another males scent .......all dogs have an olfactory (nose) system that is about 39 times the smell capacity of us humans maybe more ----- different dogs act differently females are not as much into this as males...

They are looking for scent markers of places that have been marked before, either by themselves or by other dogs. It's sort of like looking for a bulletin board to post a "Wants Roommate" ad. I've also noticed my puppy has her "accidents" in high-traffic areas like doorways.

smelling for someone of the oppisite sex. LOL They can tell a lot by the pee smell example if your healthy, young/old, female/male ect/ect. DOGS USUALLY PEE IN THE SAME SPOT OF OTHER DOGS.

Usually the scent of another dog so that they can remark the spot with THEIR scent. Natural for them to do this.
