I am going to get my 6 months old female boxer spayed next week. My vet said he will have to keep her for 2 nites. Is that normal? I thought usually it's one nite. Also, he is charging $350. other vets, i foud out, charge anywhere from 200-250. My vet is known to be a really good one around my area though...I don't know what to do. Please help. Thank you so much!

My vet does it at noon, and sends the dog home at 4pm..Charge is $90 for a 20 pound dog, and $120 for a 65 pound dog.

The only reason I could think of to keep one longer, is if they are a pug-nosed breed, that may have difficulty with anesthesia, or possibly a greyhound or saluki, for same reason..

Sounds awfully expensive to me. I have never paid that much for a female spay. Most vets, barring any complications, will let the dog go home the same day. I prefer, and make them keep the dog overnight. Check with your local humane society and see what they charge and how long they keep the dog. Check with some other vets in your area too. I paid 85.00 for a bull grown Boxer in full heat!!!

Check out this site for more info. I think it is a 24 hr vet clinic but the info is good.
Good luck.

All of the vets in my surrounding area only keeps a dog over night & charge about $200.00 . Maybe your vet is just being extra careful. Which is also a good thing. My chihuahua had a seizure the next day I brought her home after having her spayed. So, maybe he wants to make sure your dog is ok & this does not happen to your dog. Good Luck.

Wow that is expensive! I would ask somepeople for other vet references. Also there is really no reason to keep the dog more than 24 hours. I am a vet tech and our spay cost for that size dog is about $150 and the go home the next morning. the only reason we keep them overnight is so they can rest and let the anesthesia wear off.

Most vets don't keep dogs overnight for spaying any more unless the spay is done very late in the afternoon or there are issues taht make it necassary to monitor the dog closely. Vets that do keep them after spaying generally keep them over for just one night.

The cost depends on size of dog, if pre-anesthetic panels are done, etc.

The average time a vet keeps ur dog is 1 night. But u say ur vet is good . Do u trust that statement? Just because his price is higher doesn't mean he's a good vet. Maybe they like to keep watch 72hrs. after surgery. ASPCA sends ur dog home the same day. So maybe u should ask what the 2 day of the stay is for.

Wow, $350 is alot! I haven't had my puppy neutered yet, he is a 11 week old miniature beagle but my vet only charges $55 (but my dog is alot smaller than yours) and $10 a day for boarding. I would call around to the vets in your area and see if you can find a cheaper one. But to spay they shouldn't keep her over a night I wouldn't think.

Anytime I have had a dog spayed, it has been an overnight visit.

However, if your vet is known to be a really good, he/she probably wants to keep them another night just to be sure the dog is good to go. Plus, its alot easier for the vet's office to be sure your dog isn't biting the stitches. I'm sure your vet is doing the 2-night thing just to be sure your dog is as healthy as possible!

About the money... I would bet he/she is charging more because he/she is such a good vet and can get away with it. :) Plus, they are keeping your dog one extra night... its like paying for an extra night in a hotel! :)

Good luck.. I'm sure everything will go great!

Unless there is something the vet isn't telling you
it is highly unlikely that your dog will need to
stay for two days after getting spayed. I have had my pet in the vet in the morning and picked her up
in the afternoon. Just let your vet know that will not be acceptable and then shop around for another vet. He sounds like he is trying to get more money
than necessary.

Usually over night. If your vet is saying he wants to keep her longer, I would look elsewhere. There are plenty of lowcost clinics that will spay her for under $100 (contact your local spca for places) and have her back to you the next morning.
