How do parents rationalize giving powerful mind altering drugs to young children just because they can't sit still in a classroom. How do parents take the word of stranger's observations to diagnose AHDD since their is no scientific or physical evidence of such a disorder?

ADD is a sham. Fred A. Baughman, Jr., M.D., a Chief of Neurology (Board Certified) Fellow, and a member of the American Academy of Neurology said, “In numbers unmatched in any part of the world, U.S. school children are diagnosed and drugged in a quid pro quo association between education and for-profit psychiatry and psychology. Labeled ‘brain-diseased’, the schools have an excuse for the rampant illiteracy and unpreparedness, cause enough for the mounting unhappiness and failure of the children, while psychiatry gains lifetime patients….. Parents, wake up! Do you really believe that your child, seemingly normal until eight (the average age of diagnosis) has a ‘brain disease’ due to a ‘chemical imbalance of the brain’, diagnosed by a teacher? I don't think so. .... As a child neurologist for 35 years, I have authored original descriptions of real diseases characterized by objective abnormalities. I have found I can validate none of it.”

Hey gloria_512,three kids with adhd, You just defied every statistic every known. Drugging your three kids must make your job easier.
I beg you to do some research on your own. ADHD is diagnosed only through observation. There are no" viruses or bacteria" or abnormalities like a tumor or any other physical marker than is used to diagnose this sham disorder.
The DEA found that methylphenidate had nearly identical effects on humans as amphetamines and cocaine. This powerful stimulant, that has the highest abuse potential and dependence profile of all drugs that have medical usefulness, is prescribed mostly to children. By the mid nineties, methylphenidate sales leveled off at 11 million prescriptions per year. Around that time the sales of other amphetamines (primarily Adderall, used for treatment ADD and ADHD) increased from 1.3 million prescriptions in 1996 to 6 million prescriptions by 2000.

According to United Nations data the United States of America consumes 85% of all methylphenidate production. Of this 85%, 80% is prescribed to children. Apparently, ADD and ADHD are not common afflictions in other parts of the world.

In 1985, 500,000 American kids were diagnosed with ADHD. Today, between over 7 million children in the United States are labeled with this disorder.

What happened in the nine years between 1991 and 2000? In 1991, the United States Department of Education made children with ADD and ADHD eligible for special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Act. In 1991, kids diagnosed with ADHD or ADD became eligible and entitled to extra government funding for their schools. School districts across America now had a financial incentive to label kids with ADD and ADHD.

YEAH! Finally, someone else who thinks this is not a real disease.

Pay attention to your kids people. Discipline them. They might get crazy once in a while, cuz that's what kids do.

DO NOT drug your children for the sake of your own sanity!

First of all, putting a tag on a child is easier than learning how to control, inspire and educate a class of young children. I think that anyone receiving the rather poor salary of a teacher would be tempted to take the easy way out!

Parents with a child that has been tagged as having a problem face the choice of drugging the poor kid or removing him/her from school and not working. Simple economics usually dictates the parents choice at this point.

Whilst I don't agree with the parent's choice to drug a child, I do have sympathy with them. I do not have sympathy with a school system that can provide fantastic facilities for football and other sports but not pay teachers enough to attract and retain good ones.

My wife and I home school our daughter and will continue to do so through high school. She has one on one tuition from 7 AM until 1 PM. Takes a break for some physical exercises, looking after pets and doing chores until 4PM when she does 2 hours of "homework". She does not take long vacations although she does no homework in the summer so there is plenty of time for swimming. Our summer vacations are road trips and have a large educational element to them. She is 11 and has visited 17 states so far. It is a lot of hard work but the rewards are much greater than an extra pay check.

While I do agree that some children have imblanced chemicals that cause ADD and ADHD, i believe and have read and seen that they can be altered by better diet and alternative therapies.

I do agree with you 100% that diagnosing and drugging a child is easier on both teacher and parent than properly educating that particular child, and consistant parenting.

I know it is true because I have never believed ADHD or any other learnig disability in an otherwise healthy normal child, was an excuse for allowing poor behavior or learning skills. Because of that belief in all the children I've nannied or sat, or tutored who had "learning problems" or "adhd" where simply fed horrid diets, poorly parented, and in over crowded schools.

Children who lack one on one time with adults, ESPECIALLY their parents, and children who's paernts cannot provide them with consistancy and stability often suffer from emotionally enduced chemical problems.

Much like lack of sleep can cause the brain to not shut down properly when it does sleep, and you spiral into a state of insomnia, so too nervousness and depression can change the brains chemicals causing poor health conditions.

Fixing that with a synthetic chemicals only adds to the problem in most cases.

But, we do the same thing to the elderly in nursing homes. They are all sedated for the vast majority of their lives. I worked for a pharmacy company and provided nursing homes iwth their med trays and perscriptions. Every person was on sedatives in every home. Even if it was the only drug they took.

Its really sad how we medicate instead of treating.

I don't know.

What else I haven't been able to figure out, is why ADHD has become a cultrural phenomenon at the sametime video games and the internet have dominated kids time. You know, I just can't figure out how sitting on your duff all day in front of a screen doesn't burn up the same or more amount of energy as running around and playing all day......there seems to be something there.....but I just can't put my finger on it........

I once saw a news report about whether or not parents should keep junior on Ritalyn during the summer, and one mom said, "Well he's eight right now, and he sometimes acts without thinking." I couldn't believe my ears and wanted to slap that moron through my tv.

i couldn't agree with you more. i think it's a conspiracy. honestly.
think about it. the government is giving out money all over the place for kids with add/adhd; but if you are mentally retarded you are screwed! all help has been taken from the seriously mentally challenged to go to add/adhd kids? what's that about? the ones who NEED drugs can't get them, but the parents of kids who don't want to RAISE them get to drug them into submission.
i don't understand the government or these parents.

define powerful mind altering drug! adhd can be described as the hundreds of filaments on a fiber-optic light...all pointing in a different direction. the child cannot concentrate or complete even the simplest of tasks because his mind is going so fast it changes directions all the time. meds for the child is like putting a rubberband on the fibers and helping them focus on one thing at a time. you obviously have no experience in this area. take it from me, i have 3 sons with adhd. oh yeah, there are tests, criteria and symptoms of this disease used for diagnosis. maybe you should inform yourself before you pass judgment. these kids go from flunking school, to passing with flying colors, enabling them to get an education like everyone else. they also often have higher IQ scores than their classmates!
