There are actually three versions of the Ten Commandments, Jewish, Catholic (and Lutheran), and Protestant taken from Exodus Chapter 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy Chapter 5:6-21.

With the new revelations of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit in the early Catholic Church, a slightly different emphasis was placed on different commandments.

Then 1500 years later, the Protestant in objecting to certain Catholic practices, once again changed the emphasis of the Ten Commandments.

+ Jewish Ten Commandments (before 1000 BC)

1. I am the Lord your G-d who has taken you out of the land of Egypt.
2. You shall have no other gods but me.
3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your G-d in vain.
4. You shall remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy.
5. Honor you mother and father.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness.
10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.

+ Catholic (and Lutheran) Ten Commandments (about 100 AD)

1. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain
3. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it, you shall not do any work.
4. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
5. You shall not kill.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.
10. You shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ***, or anything that is your neighbor's.

Here we go again. Another Catholic basher. It's Friday night. Your social life must be poor so take it out on the Catholics. Catholics did not change the Bible. Catholics had the first New Testament. They put it together. It is all in which translation you use. Do you read a Bible which goes back to the original Hebrew or Greek or Latin? Catholics were the ones to put the Bible together from ancient manuscripts into the Books we have today. If there is any change, it is because words change when you translate them into other languages. Read the original manuscript in its original language before you throw mud at Catholics.

I am a Catholic Christian. I am really getting tired of saying that we absolutely do NOT worship anyone but the one true God in the Blessed Trinity. How many times must I say this????

Jesus said, "He who does the will of my father, my father will honor." If God honors Mary and the saints, why shouldn't we?

And about asking them to intercede for us? Well, in Revelation, the holy ones (the saints) bring our prayers to God. If you can ask your friend to pray for you (and St. Paul encourages us to pray for one another) why can't you ask the saints to pray for you, who are much closer to God than your friend because they are in heaven?

And Catholics agree that we only worship one God. We only worship God/Jesus. The Church has NEVER taught otherwise.

And actually, Catholics did not change the Ten Commandments. There are two lists of the Ten Commandments in two different chapters of the Bible

Catholics follow the commandments as St. Augustine put them together. We combine the first, second and third commandments.

Protestants combine the first and second commandments and the ninth and the tenth commandments
.
Either way, you end up with ten commandments. Check out this chart that shows it very clearly. If you accuse us of combining commandments, then you'll have to accuse yourself as well.

I am a Catholic and I am so glad that I can rely on your good old staunch views to keep me and others of my faith right, tell me what concern is it to you, is Jesus not my Judge? or have you replaced Him?
okay if you want to bible thump lets get down to it, what were the Israelites worshipping in Egypt? do you know?
what were they worshipping in the desert whenever Moses was out of camp?
what did they fashion as Moses was on Sinai receiving the 10 commandments?
answer: Baal worship, and who in reality is this Baal? none other than lucifer.
now let me first point out to you and those like you that as a Catholic I have never worshipped a statue or picture in my life and I know of no other Catholic who has or does, what does it take for those of your mindset to understand this?
secondly I/we worship the most Holy Trinity and no other, the Holy virgin Mary and the Saints who are in the presence of the same Holy Trinity, receive only that honour and respect that is rightfully due to them,it is you people who with no authority demean and rob the Holy Mother of Her rightful dignity as the sinless tabernacle of the Saviour, some of you deny her sinless conception as if the Lord, who detests sin, would be born of a woman with sin on her soul.
now it was alright to pay honour and respect to Our Blessed Lady and the Saints and also may I add to the Sacred Heart of Jesus before the Reformation for almost 1500yrs but now your sabre rattling and sactimonious piety decide that you have it right and have God in your back pocket.
I could go on but I will finish with this is an image/statue of Jesus,Mary or a Saint, Baal? is this what you are going to shove down my throat next? do you by any chance keep a picture of someone you love dearly about your person or do you have these in your home? let me ask you why, and in your own answer lies my answer to your slur, aren`t they nothing more than a loving reminder? please do me and my fellow Catholics at least a little of your so called Christian charity, and look after you own salvation and we will do the same.

For Protties... Commandment 9
For Caths... Commandment 8

THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS!!!
you are breaking that commandment.

Dear friend:

Perhaps you should stop being so judgemental and open your eyes.

The commandments are all the same. It's just how we break them down that is different.

Catholics, Anglicans and Lutherans lump the first three together.

Jews make the first three into two. As do most Protestants. But they differe on HOW those three are broken down.

Catholics, Anglicans and Lutherans say:

1) I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt...You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol...

Jews say:

1) I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt...

2) You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol...

Other Protestants (other than Ang or Luth) say:

1) I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt... You shall have no other gods before Me.

2) You shall not make for yourself an idol...

They make up the difference by lumping the last two commandments together.

If you don't believe me, simply because folks like you just love to hate Catholics...

Here is the proof from the Douay Rheims version of the Holy Bible.

Deuteronomy. Chapter 5. Verse 6-8

6 I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
7 Thou shalt not have strange gods in my sight.
8 Thou shalt not make to thyself a graven thing, nor the likeness of any things, that are in heaven above, or that are in the earth beneath, or that abide in the waters under the earth.

Please note that the Douay Rheims is the first English translation of the bible. The beloved Protestant bible KJV was pretty much copied from the Douay Rheims with just a few anti-Catholic edits made such as changing "babble" to "repeat" as a way of condemning the rosary.

Also note that the original King James version was called the English Standard version and contained all the same "books" as the Douay Rheims.

Protestants came along later and pulled all the books that referenced Catholic dogma. Claiming they were going back to their Jewish roots - but not accepting the Jewish version of the 10 Commandments. They then changed the name of their new translation of the bible to the King James Version.

Which it just plain isn't...

ehem... So who changed what? Look to thine own.

I think your "research" methods need a whole lot of help!

The question (and the Commandment) is about worship. I am a Catholic and I can tell you that we reserve true worship for God alone. Saints, the Blessed Virgin, are not "graven images' - they are fellow members of the Church Triumphant - the Creeds of the Ancient Church tell us that we believe in the "Communion of Saints". St. Paul teaches us that even "death" does not separate us from the "love of Christ".

We venerate (not worship) the saints as fellow members of the Body of Christ (the Church, of which all baptized persons are the members) - and ask for their prayers and continuing intercession for us - much as I might ask you to pray for me. No difference, if, in fact, we believe Holy Scripture (we do) and we believe what Paul said about the nature of the Church.

Worship is for God alone. No changes have been made to the Ten, or any other, Commandments.

Catholics did not CHANGE the Commandments. They are all there so how do you explain the fashioned images of the Seraphim and the Cherubim the Lord said to make and put on the Ark of the Covenant.? You have no understanding of the Catholic Faith.

I am a Catholic and I worship noone but God in the Blessed Trinity. The Catholic Church teaches that we do not worship anyone but God. We do not worship Mary, we honor her as the mother of God. She said in the Bible "All generations shall call me blessed." We do not worship saints. We ask them to help us and to pray for us just as we would ask a friend or family member to help us or pray for us. We do not worship statues, we use them as a reminder of holy people that we should use as an example of how we are to live our lives. Don't be misled by those who tell you what the Catholic church teaches when they are not taught properly. If you want to know about the Catholic faith ask a Catholic who has been properly taught in the faith.

God bless,
Stanbo

ereyes, like most of your stupid a** answers to serious questions, you come up with another moronic question filled with misinformation that you got from some fundamentalist preacher that doesn't know anything outside their narrow interpretation of the bible.

Catholics to not worship the saints or Mary. I suggest you go talk to a priest to clear up all of the misconceptions you have regarding the Catholic Church.

But I know that you won't because you are afraid of what you might discover: that everything that you have been taught about the ORIGINAL christian church is wrong.

You are right, they did change the 10 Commandments. In fact, the book of Revelation says that the Beast (the Vatican) would seek to change times and laws.
The first Commandment they got rid of was the 2nd - "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, nor bow down to them." They removed this because they DID bow down to images (of Mary and the Saints) and worship them.
They changed "Sabbath" in the 4th Commandment to "The Lord's Day", so that they could say that God's Holy day was Sunday, even though the Bible says that the "Lord's Day" is the 7th-day Sabbath.
Since they took out the 2nd Commandment, they had to split the 10th Commandment in two in order to still have 10. So they made the 9th Commandment, "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife", and the 10th "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods".
These changes are what you will find in the Catechism, but ironically, if you read the New American Bible (the modern Catholic Bible), you will find the 10 Commandments as originally written! Go figure.

Oh for the love of small green apples! WE DON'T WORSHIP STATUES! WE DONT WORSHIP MARY AND THE SAINTS! did you get that? We ask the saints and Mary to intecede on our behalf, as you might ask you mom to talk to your father for that new bike you want. WE didn't change anything. When the protestants left the Catholic church, they changed the bible.
