Facial hair is not a no-no for Mormons. However, there are some "encouraged" not to have facial hair (Bishops, Temple Workers, and BYU Students), although this isn't a strict rule, except for BYU Students who are not allowed to have facial hair unless they have a good reason for it.
They did not chisel any beard off of Brigham Young. Not sure where you got this info, but it is incorrect.
The reason they don't like it is because society today sees a clean cut individual as someone without facial hair. Although there are exceptions to this, Mormons try to match the highest standards of society when there is no religious doctrine on the issue. Thus, because there isn't anything religious about facial hair to Mormons, they try to do what the society in which they live dictates as a "high standard". This changes as society changes and is different for other countries.

I belong to the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints
You are right that the church discourages facial hair in teachers in the Church I know that the church does not have any doctrinal teaching on the matter but the apostles and prophets are clean shaved now, and we see them as setting the standards in dress and appearance for the church to follow. Some people say that the saviour had a beard. You are misinformed about the beard on the statue though.

I am not sure this is true. I work with many members of the LDS Church and have even gone to service with them. Now that I think of it, though, I do not recall any of them having facial hair. Hmmm...

what makes it even stranger is that several of their first prophets had lots of facial hair. I think it's a backlash at the hippy movement of the 1960s.

Cause it harbors fleas. Same thing goes for eyebrows and nose hair. But it's not Mormons you should be concerned about; it's Baptists.
