I have a almost 3 yr. old overweight Pomeranian-Chihuahua. She weighs about 12 lb. now. When she was little, I tried every kind of dog food out there and she just wouldn't eat. She would starve for days and then eat half a meal. This went on too long, so I gave in and started feeding her people food. The vet agreed that letting her starve herself was not healthy for her. Now she's been eating lunch meet and scraps for EVER and the vet said she should be on a ground beef and rice diet because her weight is too hard on her little knees. I just bought her rice, ground beef, and veggies to mix together but I don't know how often to feed her and what portions? I can't find it on the internet. Can anyone tell me?

Thanks!

You will not kill your dog on a raw food diet as long as you keep it balanced with protein, vegetables and fruit. Feed amounts at about 3% to 5% of body weight per day. This diet is actually healthier than any processed dog food.

Also, do not feed any processed meat.

You can very easily make highly nutritious food for her! I made food for my dog for a long time during and after that poisonous dog food scare. You'll need a good animal protein - Ground turkey + beef liver or ground beef + beef liver. Cook the meat thoroughly, and use a knife to chop the liver very fine. Always the liver - for the iron! (It's disgusting, so be prepared for that!) Separately, boil green beans and diced carrots with several bones. You can collect the bones from anything you eat - roast beef, fried chicken, it matters not! Just be certain that you include the bones, and even put a dash of vinegar to extract all the minerals. Take those bones out before you feed it to her! Mash everything together - we called it "Dog Stew." Do not add salt, do not use onions or garlic as these are terrible for dogs. Don't try to spice it up in any way - keep it plain! Finally, do not drain any fat, and when you use turkey, you can even add fats strained off of anything you cook for yourself - fats are extremely important for the dog's coat and also for her pregnancy. I typically made enough to fill a large stew pot - froze half and kept the rest in the fridge. You'll know how much to feed her based on her gaining weight, but not getting chubby. It's better than dry or canned, so she'll always want to eat more than she should. This totally spoiled my dog, and later I had to gradually take it away by mixing it with dry, a bit less each day until we were back to only dry. Good luck!

Yu are killing your dog and her life expetancy will be aroun 6 years instead of the 12-14 years she should live. You need to see a different vet. dogs will not starve their selves. Dog refuse to eat because they are use to eating people food and will hold out for what you may offer next will be better than what is in the bowel now. Get you dog on a low calery quality dry dog food ASAp

There are a number of Yahoo groups I'm sure who do raw diets for their dogs and I know they will be very helpful with recipes, amounts per size of dog etc.

You need to include all the necessary elements for a healthy diet and I think the best way to go is to contact people who are feeding this way with their dogs.

Cats are very different from dogs in their nutritional needs - their meat must be raw for the taurine. I have always felt that sharing your beef stew with your dog would be a good meal - wholesome meat and vegetables all done up in a tasty gravy.

Once they get the taste of real people food, it's hard to turn them around. Why don't you just start slow and mix up the beef, rice and a little bit of dog food in together, then decrease the people gradually together with the dog food. Animals will eat when they get hungry that's for sure. You can also try dog food with milk in it. 2% will work. It's a matter of the dominate one in the family and right now she is the boss. That's happened to me and I stayed firm, now my dog likes dog food with milk and once in a while I give her some raw meat, which is really good for their stomach and digestive system.

Pet Botanics has a product called "Lamb Roll" or "Lamb Log" available at PetSmart stores. You can slice a piece and then grate it or chop it small and your dog will likely go nuts over it. It's great for picky eaters and is often cubed and used for treats for dogs though some use it as a meal. It is healthy and dogs love it.

it sounds like she may only need to eat 1-2 times per day. I'd start her at fourth of a cup. You can prep it and it will be fine for a 2-4 days.

Good luck

First of all a dog will NOT starve itself to death. Your dog has realized that you are a sucker and if she waits long enough you will give in to her and she will get the good stuff. As someone who has dealt in animal nutrition for a while here is my advice.......find a food that is of GOOD quality then put it in her dish and leave it there....it may take a few days but she WILL eat eventually......Stop offering anything else than dog food or she will always be fat and never eat the dog food....Lunch meats are for human consumption and not animals it is VERY unhealthy to be giving her that....I know how hard it is to stop giving her what she wants but it is for the best and if you want your pet aroung for a long time then get her on dog food and not human food......

PS Vet spend years in school and only 6 hours on animal nutrition...i mean my god they tell people to feed IAMS>>>ugh

Try feeding her Biljac (in the freezer section of the pet store) and see if she will eat that. As with any food, over feeding will cause an overweight dog.

She should have about 1/4 patty per day, split between 2 feedings. Lentils are a good, cheap, fat-free protein source, and can replace some of the rice..
The world's oldest recorded dog, died last year, at the age of 27..she was raised vegan, on a rice and lentil based diet, with fresh garden veggies..
