Pit bull terriers have been domesticated for over 800 years. There are drawings of pit bulls used to illustrate Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales." from the early middle ages. Since these dogs have been pets for so long, they are "people pleasers." If they are trained to be aggressive and mean, they will be, to please their owners. If they are treated with affection and respect, chances are they will be extremely loving and gentle. We had an American Staffordshire pit bull who was the most affectionate, sweetest dog I've ever known.
Pit bulls do NOT deserve to be labeled "mean" and to be hated. This is a horrible misconception, and whenever you find people who believe that, enlighten them as to the true nature of these wonderful animals.

Not everyone hates Pit Bulls.
Most of the negative things one hears about Pit Bulls come from the media and from people who believe everything the media says.
The idea that Pit Bulls are generally aggressive is a fallacy. They were bred to be dog aggressive because dog fighting was a popular sport in the 19th Century (most breeds were originally bred to perform some task--herding, guarding, hunting, retrieving.) Handlers had to be able to go into the ring and pull dogs apart without the dogs turning on them, as most other breeds will, so the dogs that showed any sign of human aggression were immediately put down. (Please note that I do not condone dog fighting at all; these are just facts.)
A Pit Bull that shows any aggression towards humans has either been poorly bred (in-breeding is an unfortunate side effect of the breed's popularity) or trained that way. Pit Bulls are loyal, loving, tenacious dogs. There are thousands of people who love the breed, unfortunately some for the wrong reasons.
Believing that all Pit Bulls are aggressive killers is like believing that all inner-city youth are gangbangers or all Catholic Priests are pedophiles because that's what you see on TV and read in the news. Don't believe the hype.

People fear the unknown. Because they do not understand what the breed is all about, they will shy away from the truth when told. They will only hear what they want to hear & that is what the media points out. I own & train this breed, they are nothing like what some will try to say they are. This breed is very loyal & head strong. An American Pit Bull Terrior, should not be owned by just anyone. Do your history & check into the back-ground of the breed before going out to get one. There are many blood-lines & traits that should looked into before bringing one into your home. If someone reading this now did not know any of what I had just wrote here before hand, never own one. There many of us responsible owners out there & we want the truth to be told! I just did my part as an owner & went to the Bully March on Oct. 28th. We had a good outcome of support & we rallied all together. Our dogs are our life & our best friends too! Photos are up on www.ROVERlution.org for Brea, CA. I'm the red-head in glasses holding up a sign, showing some support for my dogs.

Everyone doesn't but you are right that the media has been singling out this breed and over reporting any incident with a bite case involving it. This has been effective in painting Pit Bulls as viscious killers though at one time they were referred to as "Nanny Dogs" because of how protective and sweet they were around children. "Petey" from "The Little Rascals" was that Pit Bull dog that hung around with the "Our Gang" crowd.
Unfortunately because they are a breed that has a powerful pressure bite, sick people have popularized using them to fight each other and fight wild pigs etc for sport. That is what should be focused on, the sick people that do this stuff. There are many large breed dogs that can be dangerous if not supervised or properly trained or if they are improperly trained. A breed should not have to suffer being banned and outlawed because of ignorance about the breed.

Many people only know what they've heard about pitts from negative sources. Since dog fighting is so common amongst pitt bulls they've come to be feared for their aggression and endurance.

Pittbulls are actually very sweet and loving. It all depends on how they are raised.

The breed changes with the years too. When my dad was a kid German Shepards and Doberman Pinchers were the dogs to fear!

Pit bulls are large, muscular dogs. When pits attack, the victim will have a very big obstacle to overcome.

Dogs don't have morals. All they have is their instinct. Pit bulls by nature want to please their owner. They look to their owner for the approval. If the owner is a good owner, the dog will be well socialized and friendly. If the owner is a bad owner, the dog will be aggressive and dangerous.

But the question itself is misleading. Not everyone hates pit bulls. My roommate has a 7-year old pit by the name of Daisy. I've taken Daisy to cafes and art walks and stuff like that. She's always popular, and I think she has more friends in my town than I do.

People seem to hate "pit bulls" for one reason. The media.

Fear and propaganda go a long long way. Then, all it takes one more 'attack' or 'mauling' to solidify what you are starting to believe.

For every attack, there is usually a story behind the attack that NEVER gets published. Why would any dog "unprovoked", "unsupervised",and with a small child attack? Why would a dog, regardless of breed attack somebody when all it sees is inside a fence while chained to a 6 ft chain. Is it starting to make sense yet? These dogs were NEVER meant to be human aggressive. They are lousy guard dogs. These dogs are highly social and want to be where you are doing what you are doing all the time! What they do is hunt. Like any other terrier out there. They go for the small vermin like rats...not for the two-legged vermin like people.

Pit Bulls are terriers. Terriers are the purely canines that were bred to kill. some pit bulls, as in the different breed, are extra dominant/aggressive than others. also, as with different breeds, some are worry aggressive. the issue is they're so solid that once they're aggressive, they could do a good number of damage in a little while. Jack Russells may be aggressive similar to a pit bull. yet even as a Jack is going after yet another canines, that is more convenient to split the strive against than with a canines that weighs 60 or 70 pounds. And a Jack isn't going the snap the decrease back of yet another canines. authentic tale - at Jack Russell gatherings (the position they have races, etc) they convey a baby's wading pool so as that once the Jacks strive against (and lock their jaws), they purely p.c.. up the canines and toss them contained in the pool. not all Pit Bulls are overly aggressive. the issue is few people recognize the thanks to p.c.. a canines it really is not dominant

Personally, I don't hate the dog, I hate the people that can't respect the power that pits have and be responsible with them.

I hate the people who fight pits, the people who get this dog but don't have a clue how to train it, the people who think they can let obedience go, and the people who allow these dogs to hurt other dogs, as well as people.

I have had dogs for 30 years, and always trained my own. I would never attempt to own a pit though. It is a breed I'm not familiar enough with to own and train myself. (I prefer mutts anyway, but that's neither here nor there.)

It's not the dog's fault. Pits are beautiful and with the right breeding and training, can be wonderful trusted companions. (I have friends that own pits.) It's just a breed that you can't afford to NOT take seriously.

Because people are ignorant and listen to other ignorant people! I am so sick of people being breedist! Pitt Bulls are NOT bad dogs in general. It is the people who are BAD owners of them. Unless they come from bad breeding, they are not born aggressive - contrary to popular belief. The only reason we hear about their attacks is because it makes good news. Does anyone really care that there are 7 lb Chihuahuas out there attacking people? They have bad reps because a good number of Pitty owners TRAIN them to be aggressive! It is NOT their fault. They are born sweet pups and are taught how to act by their owners. The more people feed into this "pitt bulls are bad" (insert bad word here), the more the bad people are going to buy them because they want people to fear them (via their dog). Those people make me sick . . . it is just another form of animal abuse. I hope someday we can change people's view and help keep these innocent pups out of the wrong hands.
