God says there is none righteous. No! Not one. All our works are as filthy rags. It is only by Christ giving us His righteousness through the gift of salvation that one can have righteousness. You sound like you are a stranger to grace. You should have asked something to the effect of "How can I treat others the way I want to be treated and how does this fall into God's perfect plan?"

You can only do this through God's help and enabling.
First you must know that your old man is crucified with Christ that the body of sin might be destroyed, that hencforth you should not serve sin.
Second you must reckon yourself dead indeed to sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ.
Then you do not allow sin to reign in your mortal body nor obey the desires of sin.
You yield your members as instruments of righteousness and yourself unto God as one alive from the dead
This way you will begin to obey from the heart the teaching delivered.
I see the second point as of pivotal and crucial importance in the chain since as you reckon, God is able to perform. It is you doing it but God enables and makes effective.
The full account is of course found in the sixth chapter of Romans.

I had a friend who recently converted and he stayed positive by surrounding himself by good people, listening to uplifting music, reading the bible at least once a day, and attend church on Sunday.
It has to be part of your life every second, not only when you feel like being righteous but also when you don't feel like it. I've recently started reading scriptures at least once a day and it's made a tremendous difference in my life. I feel like I'm a lot more patient, tolerant and understanding.
A good book to help you get started is 'A Purpose Driven Life'. Also, try to find a good friend or mentor who can help you through this process so you're not doing it alone.

You need to find out what righteousness is and do it every day. It's a struggle, you will make mistakes, but never let your shortcomings get you down.

practice, one second at a time. Make a conscious decision every time you breath that you are walking the path. I know that's a bit extreme, but you get the idea.
