This article from today shows the recent research that has been going on in regards to red wine. It could help reverse the effects of obesity, help people live longer, increase endurance, and the research could be helpful in studying diabetes and other diseases.

This came from WebMD:
"The New England Journal of Medicine, evaluated more than 12,000 women aged 70-81. Moderate drinkers scored better than teetotalers on tests of mental function. Researchers found a boost in brainpower with one drink a day. Moderate drinkers had a 23% reduced risk of mental decline compared with nondrinkers. "
And Dr. Thomas Stuttaford says that "Alcohol in all forms makes blood less likely to clot readily and it increases the amount of heart-protecting good cholesterol and reduces the amount of the artery-damaging pernicious form of cholesterol. It improves the health of the lining of the arteries."
Every source mentions that moderation is the key, and that the effects of more than one drink can counter the good effects.

From what I understand it is indeed on the list of 'things that can help reduce the risk of heart disease'. The thing is, it's pretty far down the list, way below things like a healthy diet & exercise. The wine industry has just kinda run with it & plasters the fact all over the place

Grapes and red wine contain photochemicals that appear to reduce the risk of heart disease. Studies show that moderate consumption of alcohol independently reduces heart disease and cancer risks.

It can be, in moderation.
I've also heard that beer has many of the same benefits, and that non/low-alcoholic beers do too. In fact, the non/low-alcohol beers will lower your chances of getting thrombosis while regular beers raise them.
