I know of many accounts of it, and my bird does it. If he is by my feet, or I move/wiggle any part of my feet with or without whistling, he will always try to interact with it. I know they are curious and somewhat mischievous birds, but sometimes it comes out of nowhere and is quite funny. But alas, I have no idea why he squawks, squeaks and does some little, puffed-up mock charging around my foot. Also, even if I have shoes on, he does it. So I do know it probably isn't only my toes. It's adorable, but I can't help but wonder why in the world he/other tiels do it.

I don't know about cockatiels from first-hand experience, but my parakeet does the same!

I think it has to do with --any-- intelligent bird. They enjoy playing. Also- your foot is close to his size! There's this strange being in his territory, wiggling around it's bits. He wants to know what's up! It's his job, being a male, to establish his place and the place of anything else around him that he might have dominion over.

I know my 'keet does the same thing to my boyfriend's hands (he has very large hands, his feet are so big my 'keet won't even "challenge" them!lol), as well as my feet. He also does it to the computer mouse...it's so cute when he struts over to it with his head feathers puffed up and squabbles/chitters at it like "listen here, I'm boss"! He follows my pen/pencil around, too, if I'm writing and he comes anywhere near me....tries his hardest to "kill" the pen. He never has any problems about my hands until I'm trying to type something while he's on the keyboard. Invasion of keyboard territory is forbidden and all fingerintruders must be destroyed!! =)

Just keep in mind that if he's doing a lot of loud noise making/sqwuaking that he's probably more frightened or intimidated than jovial. He may be under the impression that he's being threatened, not just playing, so watch his reactions to make sure he isn't stressing out. If he is...you'll just have to try and keep him away from your feet!

My tiel really wants to trim my fingernails or toenails, then I think if he does this to me he wants something in return. Sure enough he wants his head scratched. Preening is a social event for them, and other pets. Yeah it hurts sometimes, but Vito really likes his neck scratched and will do anything to get me to scratch his neck.

He is playing. When he puffs up he is showing your foot that he is dominant. Funny little birds adorable & smart & great company. Enjoy!!

I don't know why they do it, but mine does too. Unless I'm wearing red toenail polish, then he freaks out and hisses at them!
