When someone is describing the size of the screen, they are measuring diagonally across the screen.
If you're measuring it for shipping, pretend it's a box and measure the largest dimensions in three directions (height, width, depth.)

Measure across from the upper-right corner to the lower-left corner. Diagonal is how its listed on the box and tag at the store.
