It's really hard to talk about an average, as there is lots of variation by neighborhood. If I had to pick a number, I would say about 300 or 350 feet, but I have seen blocks that are less than 100 feet long and some that are over 800 feet.

Usually, blocks are much longer in two opposing directions than they are in the two directions that are perpendicular to those. For example, in mid-town Manhattan, the north-south blocks are much longer than the east-west ones. Each neighorhood has its own orientation for the streets.

If you are trying to figure it out in terms of miles....20 city blocks make one mile.

So an average block would be 1/20th of a mile.

That is for blocks that run north/south.

The avenues are longer - there are four blocks in-between two avenues.
