It's called elision, which means the sliding together of certain sounds. It may have been pronounced "liekester" at one time, but over many years certain sound have been slipped together or dropped. Yes, we Brits are famous for this. Other examples:
Norwich is pronounced "Norij."
Bicester is "Bister."
Belvoir is "Beaver."
Hawick is "Hoik."
But my favourite is Cholmondely, which is pronounced "Chumlee." No kidding!!

different than for Iranians and close by international locations, the BBC in all probability gets it superb the main, even nonetheless they'd flow overboard whilst announcing chinese language and Hispanic names. so far as i've got heard, purely individuals, and maybe some Canadians, yet much less so, consult with it and Iraq, as Eye-ran and Eye -raq. This reasons plenty mirth in England and Europe and furthers cultural stereotypes, plenty as Bush used to assert "nucular", whilst the be conscious "nuclear" has no way logically to be stated like that. OTOH they actually do now not care what others think of because of the fact it works for them and that they do now not ought to seek advice from people who've distinctive techniques of talking, a minimum of many times. So the placement will become eye-appropriate and that they do now not replace into eye-rascible, even nonetheless if challenged, they'd legitimately replace into irate i.e. Eye-fee.
