This is not a job for the military.

The military, while it can do border guard duties, is not meant for this sort of use. It would be a waste of manpower, and would provide, man for man, inferior performance in such a position.

Customs agents are not like mall security guards. They are trained professionals who are specialists in their own little slice of the law enforcement community. Soldiers, on the other hand, while polyvalent and providing an armed presence, a show of force, are not meant for law enforcement work. This would contravene several Canadian laws to begin with.

To add to this, it would tax the Canadian Forces' manpower even more so than it already is and it would put a serious crimp on our ability to train and field troops to sustain our current overseas commitments. Either way, it is not feasible from a military standpoint.

Also, Canada and the US share the world's longest undefended border. We both rely on this for ease of trade, which is crucial to both our economies. As such, a border with military checkpoints will be much harder and much slower to cross than the currently civilian-monitored one with only marginally better results at stopping unlawful crossings.

And there are several ways to cut the costs of arming and training our customs agents. The military and the various police agencies are full of personnel who are qualified to train others in the use of firearms. Issuing border guards with weapons that either the RCMP or the military uses will also cut costs when it will come to supplying those weapons and ammunition. So, realistically, there would be only minor costs involved in the training of personnel, with most of the funds going towards acquiring said weapons as opposed to teaching people to use them properly.

Why train them... just give them the weapon and tell them it is OK to shoot on sight. Money saved, problem solved... then Canadians can go on wasting billions of (Canadian) dollars on their socialist health care system.

I'm guessing that you are referring to the mass exodus that will probably occur after the US starts drafting. I'd say to do whatever you wish. I for one don't care what you do to them. They will be illegal aliens and traitors to the US. Shoot them if you like.
