Ive got a couple of works dos coming up and hoping i might get a look in with a guy i like. What sort of signs should i be looking for to see if hes interested and what can i do to draw his attention. Do people find it easier getting it together with someone in work outside the working environment?

A bit of booze will definitely help - but don't do anything you're going to regret.
Signs that show he's interested - he'll carry on looking at you after you've finished speaking, he'll stand a bit closer than is strictly necessary, he'll raise his eyebrows when he looks at you, and he'll mirror your movements in his own posture.

Yes, outside the working environment with a bit of booze for dutch courage is always easier. Try to catch his eye and give him a nice smile!

Unless you are head and shoulders more attractive than anyone else in the vicinity .. you may just have to stop hoping he'll work it out ... and just be grown up and talk to him.
