Simple answer is used on eBay. But the real issue is your last question re. is Bose worth it.

You don't mention what you include in "system" nor the price range you are considering. But I recently answered a question on Bose speakers which basically said, you can do better for less (see this answer at the first link). A second responder to a similar question provides an even more detailed -- and even more negative -- response. (See 2nd link and response by Jefferson).

That said, you can use CNet's recommended equipment lists as a good starting point. See the second link.

If you are talking $500 - $1000 or so look at the home theatre in a box (HTIB) recommendations.

If you are considering more (or even in the $1000 range) I'd look at the A/V receiver, DVD and speaker listings separately. In almost all cases -- due to a high degree of standardization -- you can expect to combine any of the individual components and have them work well together.

That said, the power requirements will vary depending on efficiency of the speakers (See first link on this point). Also, these days almost no-one buys a CD changer (because DVD players will play CDs but CD players won't play DVDs). There are DVD players that will not only play DVDs and CDs, but WMA or MP3 files on DVD-R or RW (or DVD+R or RW), DIvX and SACDs and DVD-A.

It's difficult to be more precise given I don't know your priorities / needs, but as I advised for speakers, do some reading first and you will have a good chance of finding a system at your price point that you can feel is excellent value for the money. You won't get this with a Bose ... even used.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Bose makes some good products, but they are without fail way overpriced. I'm not saying just a little bit either. I mean they cost twice to three times what they're worth, especially when it comes to home theater systems. Polk Audio, Energy and Klipsch 5.1 satellite systems are much better than any setup Bose offers.

Hello, Here is the problem with Bose' and many other large companies that want to keep their brand value. They set a MAP price on their items, the MAP price is the lowest price retailers are allowed to sell the item for. So basically the Manufacturer sets the lowest price and retailers are not allowed to sell below that price. Bottom line is, you won't find it cheaper anywhere else unless you buy a used or remanufactured system.

I'm sorry I don't have the answer, but wanted to get this question in my panel so I could see what other people were saying about this. I am interested in Bose as you are and would also like to have some info. I give you 'Thumbs Up' for this question.

Occationally some stores have sales, but pretty much Bose has
things on lock-down. This is a part of their marketing monopoly.
