In the summer I was driving down a country road and there was no sign saying what speed i should be doing so i was driving to the condition of the road. All of a sudden a bright sign started flashing saying slow down and it told me the speed limit.
It made me really embarrased and I did not know where to kide my self. Do you think these are more effective than speed cameras, do they slow you down?

I have not seen the ones where they tell you the speed your going. Only the ones that flash up the spead you should be going. then a big camera sign flashes up.

As far as my speed, it turns out that i had the right idea of the condition of the road. those things were at the bottom of the hill. I was doing around 30mph so i must of just gone over when they flashed. Not all people drive like idiots

Found out the other day that there is a village near where I stay with one of these flashing signs. Turns out the boy racers are using it to see who can record the highest speed - priceless!

We have had several different version of this around Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
We have a number that just flash when you go over the speed limit. I think that they are pretty good - but you do get the occasional driver behind you that thinks is it amusing to speed to 'twitch' the darned thing so that you slow down.
There was also another one that has gone now. That was awful - it would just flash up and tell you what speed you were doing - even if it was 20mph!
I think that generally it is a state of mind. The ones that are going to speed will carry on doing so and the ones that aren't are happy to be reminded if they have a heavy foot at that time - so the only ones that it is going to affect are the drivers that don't really speed all of the time.
So, why don't the people that design these things realise that the ones that they really should be looking for are not going to take the slightest bit of notice????
I do think that for high powered cars 70mph on a Motorway is a bit silly - but how can you have a sign telling you which BHP value car can travel at what speed?
Stick to what you belive in. I believe that we should keep within the speed limit and if we need a little reminder now and then it isn't a problem. I've done the same thing and had the 'flash' made me say 'oops' to myself. Checked up on the gas - but you will always get the morons that don't.
Don't feel too bad, it happens to the best of us!

You missed the sign telling you the maximum speed. It would be very dangerous to suddenly spring a speed restriction sign on you. It is called driving without due care and attention.Speed restrictions have been put in place all over the country to reduce the death figures from speedy drivers such as yourself. You were obviously going to fast for the conditions you were approaching. There are too many idiot drivers on the roads today and so the highways department implement the speed restrictions. They are saying if you won't slow down then we will slow you down with our restrictions. You can make all the excuses you like, you were going too fast and would have killed anybody that got in your way. They save the everyday motorist from manslaughter prosecutions. If you want to drive excessive speeds then find a race track. You can only kill yourself then. Safe Motoring.

They are probably more effective than speed cameras as you aren't being measured without you knowing it. You tend to feel guilty as other people can see you're speeding, even if it is only a couple of mph over. I have the type that shows you the exact speed your doing in my village that flashes at 31mph. It seems to be spot on with the cars speedo, apart from last week when it said I was doing 212mph! Impressive for a Toyota Corolla, in third gear. It's become a game now when no-one's around....
