I am fluent in 4 languages (English, Chinese, Taiwanese, Latin) and am currently learning French and Spanish....so I'll have to say 4 with two on the way. I don't know who has the record though. I heard some historical figures could speak many languages when they had to do trade.

In theory, there are no limits. I personally feel I can learn as many languages as I want. So far, I can speak French, local creole, English, Classical Arabic, a couple of regional Arabic dialects, Spanish and Berber (a language spoken by the original inhabitants or North Africa). I am planning to learn Italian and German.

"Some notable hyperpolyglots include Sir Richard F. Burton (1821–1890), the cardinal Giuseppe Mezzofanti (1774–1849), Sir John Bowring (1792–1872), William Jones (September 28, 1746 – April 27, 1794) and the linguistics professor Kenneth Hale (1934–2001)."
"Mezzofanti is well-known for being a hyperpolyglot and it is believed that he spoke thirty-eight languages and fifty dialects fluently, while also having proficiency in many other languages with a lesser fluency."

Many people seem to claim the title. This is one of them:
"Ziad Youssef Fazah (born June 10, 1954 in Monrovia, Liberia) is reputed to be the world's most accomplished hyperpolyglot. It is said that he speaks, reads and understands 58 languages, most of which learned before the age of 20. His skills have been successfully tested on TV shows around the world by speakers of such languages as Mongolian, Czech, Korean and Hungarian. Raised in Lebanon, he has lived in Brazil since the 1970s."

nicely, thinking isn't a great number of a remember the place you're thinking actual words on your head, yet i might think of it extra to be of imagery or strikes... If I have been chatting with you in French or Spanish, i could be thinking in English, by way of fact it particularly is what I first have heard. regardless of is heard extra, you already know? i'm distinctly good with Spanish, yet i'm going to continuously be thinking in English. i do no longer think of it particularly is too worry-unfastened the place a individual learns 2 nearby languages from day one. There must be something this is in some far extra dominanting than the different. :]

Some people have a knack for it. I get by with my French, Spanish, Nepalese, Bosnian and Arabic. Learning the root language is tough, but after that, then several similar languages become available, like (in my case) Croation, Russian, German, Hindi and others. sometimes it gets messy, but it's fun.
