well my son of four years old had this habit, and surely i could not put bitter things on his nails. Well the good news is that this being psychosomatic problem, the most safe treatment is the homeopathy, it took very lil time and voila, he got over the habit of nail biting. I had read about homeopathy on this site www.fitnesshigh.com

I'm in my 20's and have had a nail biting problem as long as I can remember. I'd bite whenever I was nervous, upset, bored, whatever. Painting them didn't work because I'd just bite the polish off. That bad tasting polish didn't work either because after washing your hands a couple times the bad taste is pretty much gone. When I was a kid my mom tried putting tobasco sauce on my fingertips but that just made me sick. In short, I've tried pretty much everything to stop biting my nails.

The only thing that remotely works for me is getting a set of acrylic nails put on. They're thick and impossible to bite through unless you have steel teeth. It will cost you at least $25, and maybe more depending on where you go. Don't go to some back woods hole in the wall nail salon because you can get some nasty infections. You can have the nails cut any length you want, I started out with them just barely longer than my finger tips since I wasn't used to long nails. Be prepared, though, they might look at you funny because you want them so short. Once you get the first set, depending on how fast your nails grow, go back in 1 to 3 weeks to get them filled; ask your nail technician what they recommend doing to maintain them (how often to get them filled and how often to get them completely changed). Keep up with them for atleast 2 or 3 months before you try going without them.

When you decide to try without them, you can remove them yourself or go back to the nail salon and have them remove them. My experiences have not been good going back to have them removed since they just rip them off instead of soaking them off and end up ripping my nail off just below the quick causing them to bleed.

To do it yourself, go to any store that carries nail polish remover and get a formula that says it will remove acrylic nails. Also get some manicure sticks, small fingernail clippers (if you don't have them) and Sally Hanson's "Hard as Wraps" and "Maximum Growth" formula polishes. Follow the directions on the remover for removing acrylic nails. Use the manicure sticks and small nail clippers to remove the nails once they've become soft. Make sure all the acrylic stuff is off your nails. Shape them with a file, but don't get file happy or they'll end up way short again. Buff them with a buffer and polish them with the "Hard as Wraps" polish. Your nails will be VERY VERY thin and flexible after having the acrylic nails, but the "Hard as Wraps" polish will thicken them up so they aren't as likely to snag or tear. Follow the directions on the "Hard as Wraps" polish... I think it says to repeat every couple of days or something and if you get the urge to bite or pick at your nails chew a piece of gum. Now that you've already been "broken" of the habit the gum thing works a little bit. After a month or so of keeping up with the "Hard as Wraps" polish routine, use the "Maximum Growth" polish to help your nails grow faster and stronger naturally.

If at any time you find yourself biting again, even a tiny bit, go back to the salon and have another set of acrylics put on. This will be a long struggle, but I've been nail biting free for a little over a year now. I still have to go back to the nail salon every now and then during very stressful times, but it's worth it. There are so many germs on your hands at any given time you could get really sick by biting your nails. You also kind of have to treat it like an addiction/bad habbit because that's what it is.

use the bad smelling nail polish or something that tastes badlike burshing a little bleach on your fingers or somthing spicy, liook the juice from a hot pepper. also, create a new healtier habbit to replace. so that way everytime you catch yourself bitting your nails you can start doing your new habit

You know what, I had the same problem! here's what did.
Put nail polish on your nails.

Why because when you wear nail polish, it will be more niticeable
when you chew on them & you are not gonna want that.
Also it's gonna taste bad in your mouth once you chew on them!

It worked for me! Hope it works for you!!
