i am amazed at how many people really think this. do they not realize that he started showing up in a uniform as soon they started talking of a army. most will say will it was in his speech to Congress after but they only see half the speech here it is

I beg they will accept my cordial thanks for this distinguished testimony of their approbation. But lest some unlucky event should happen, unfavorable to my reputation, I beg it may be remembered by every gentleman in the room that I this day declare with the utmost sincerity I do not think myself equal to the command I am honored with. As to pay, Sir, I beg leave to assure the Congress that as no pecuniary consideration could have tempted me to accept this arduous employment at the expense of my domestic ease and happiness, I do not wish to make any profit from it. I will keep an exact account of my expenses. Those I doubt not they will discharge, and that is all I desire."

he is protecting his honor by saying he didn't want it.

I don't know. He didn't have a problem with being president or commander and chief of the army.
What he did have a problem with was being a King the way some people wanted him to be. He did not want to be absolute controller That was what he and the Continental army were fighting against.

You are confusing his acceptance (in-fact, desire) to be commander-in-chief of the American Army with his lack of enthusiasm for assuming the office of the first president. He was reluctant to accept as there were debates at the time as to whether the president may be referenced as "the King." He wanted no part of a government formed that merely copied the one that he had just defeated.
