Well I can tell you what unit served the worst chow I've ever seen ;)
Went on a field exercise at Ft. Hood with the 1st Armored, their idea of dinner was to give you ONE can of "whatever" (C rations) out of a 55 gal trash can of boiling water, and that was it ! ! ! No condiments what so ever to go with it. Did this for the entire two weeks.

I've seen some shocking units in my time.

I'd agree with the comments made about 4ID and 1st Cav, having experience of both in Iraq. On the US forces side, I'm afraid I'm going to have to plump for the US Special Forces, however, as they are more special needs than what the Brits would consider to be SF. Have you ever watched the A-Team? Well they really do shoot like that; I've seen them on the ranges. You could forgive them their mediocrity, if only they weren't so convinced that they're the greatest soldiers ever.

On the Brit mil side of things, I'm going to have to have to stick my neck out and pick the whole of the brigade of Guards. Listen to any guardsman, and you'll get the impression that he is the finest soldier, serving with the finest regiment there's ever been. And he'll probably try to convince you that his regiment (whichever one it is) is the oldest in the British Army. Here's a quick pointer. Not all the guards regiments can all be the oldest, and just because they are old, doesn't necessarily mean they are any good. For instance, I've not seen many Model T Fords winning the Grand Prix in recent years. Perhaps, just as the automotive industry has moved on a bit since you could order your car in any colour as long as it was black, the Guards regiments should put their glories at Waterloo on the back seat while they try to work on tactics to bring them a bit more reknown on the modern battlefield.

Personally, I blame the officers. While having a six figure private income, and the ability to order a pink gin in Swahili might be terribly important in the City, it doesn't make you a good soldier and it certainly doesn't make you a leader of men. Have you ever stopped to consider why the rest of the British Army stopped the practice of buying commissions a hundred years ago? It was to stop public school hooray henry's decimating whole battalions at a time with charge-of-the-light-brigade type decisions. While such ballsy "thinking" might have worked jolly well against the Harrow first fifteen, these days such decisions are considered somewhat retarded, rather than heroic when it comes to modern warfare.

US Special Forces - stick to what you are best at; firing of as much ammunition in as short a space of time as humanly possible without inflicting any injuries on anbody with the probable exception of your comrades and innocent civilians. And brigade of Guards - you just keep polishing your kit to look pretty for the next parade ...

... And leave the real soldiering to those who just do the bloody job without feeling the need to tell everybody how good they are.

And what is the fastest way of supplying troops on the ground? Not too good if you cant secure an airfield. The RAF gunners do a vital job even if they are a bit mediocre. The Pioneers Regiment is another example. They build toilets and kitchens. They are still vital don't you think?

I have to disagree with you i worked with the raf regiment and found them a excellent fighting force.
they guard our airfields yes but if they didnt do it who would.
you really are being unfair our forces are the best in the world and yes there are units that are not always battle ready but believe me the RAF regiment is very highly combat ready:iserved from 1968 to 1980 and they were good soldiers, what they are like now i cant say.
AND I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT UNIT YOU SERVED IN !!!!!!

What a stupid ignorant question. You are having a laugh aren't you? Do you know how many pilots have died to keep our country free from invasion. I dare you to say it to anyone who is or has served in the RAF. You silly ignorant little boy. You should always do your homework before you make such crass remarks about one of the finest fighting forces in the world today. I find your question offensive and you should be ashamed of yourself. What you are saying is almost treacherous. Grow up ignoramous.

56th Field Artillery Command "Pershing." US Army Medium range nuclear missile unit. A mockery of the army and real soldiers. When they went to the field it looked like a circus train on the move. Worst trained unit in the Army.
