Apparantly the international airport doesn't have much to do. I thought about going into Bangkok for a few hours, but I know nothing of the city. Is it okay for me to travel alone? Where should I go? What should I do? Any tips or advice? Or should I just find a good book and settle down for 8 hours in the airport?

Normally travel agents don't recommend heading into Bangkok for such a short period of time becuase Bangkok's traffic is so bad/unpredictable that you might well get into a traffic jam on the way back to the airport and miss your flight.

Realistically, assuming you check-in two hours before your next flight, you have six hours. I've been looking around the area of the new airport and this is what I've found that you could do in 6 hours:-

1) there are lots of golf courses in the area - price for 18 holes, incl. compulsory caddy - USD 30-60. There are also a couple of driving ranges - one of which has an American country and western theme (including music) which is slightly weird but stangely relaxing.

2) Safari World, wildlife park, is reasonably easy to get to from the new airport. Although its not that close, the roads to get to and from the airport are country roads and therefore pretty fast.

3) (perhaps I shouldn't say this) I found a 'lady massage' place too about 25 minutes drive from the airport, although I didn't try it out. I also found a more, shall I say, traditional massage place too a couple of kilometers from the airport that offers a 2 hour Thai Traditional Massage (Nuat Thai) which I did try out and which was pretty good.

4) There are plenty of good Thai restaurants in the area although you'd need a car/cab to get to them from the airport but which don't charge the fancy prices that the airport does.

Email me if you want more info.

The airport is quite a distance from the city so you won't have much time. I would be practical and not too ambitious. Take a cab to Sukhumvit. Check yourself into a spa or a traditional massage parlor and get a 2-hour overhaul. Great stuff for about 250-600 TBht an hour. Nothing like a traditional Thai massage to loosen those joints from all that travelling. It's generally quite safe to wander about on your own. Enjoy.

Wonder if you will do the layover in the day. Then you can probably get a cab and go for a quick city tour before going back. You probably can do a spa and massage too. There should be plenty around. Just to pass time.

The travel service desk in the airport should be able to provide some assistance. Have fun.

8 hours really isn't very long. I'd stay at the airport, get something to eat and look at the shops there. You can read your book or just watch the people go by while sipping a cold Singha beer. If you knew the area that would be different.

Take a cab to Khao San Road (just make sure you negotiate the fee before getting into the cab—"Thao rai" means "how much?"—you should be able to communicate enough to figure out how many bhat you'll need). That's where all the backpackers hang out. You can go for a walk from that area along the river and check out Wat Pho (about a half-hour walk). If you have time, there's some cool markets just South of there. You'll definitely need a map. Buy a Lonely Planet guide before you go.
