I like to get informations from anyone who experienced with copper IUD as birth control. I just decided to have one. I am 26 and I have 4 small children. I think now is the time for me to start going on birth control before getting pregnant again and I choose this method which I think is the most effective.

My question is:
-Do I really have to check the strings every month as required?

-What if I didn`t take it out after it is expired? Will that harm my body or will I get pregnant?

- Does inserting or taking out the IUD really hurt ?

pls help.

I had my IUD put in 6 years ago. I have the one that is good for 10 years. I faintly remember it hurting somewhat when it was put in. But it was nothing compared to labor contractions. I check occassionally if my strings are there but not monthly. I like not having to worry about taking a pill or taking a shot every 3 months.

I'm having a hard time with birth control, my doctor says I am really fertile. Birth control just doesn't work for me. I am to scared to get the IUD because I know to many girls that have gotten pregnant with an IUD, one girl got pregnant 3 times on an IUD, another friend of mine said her IUD moved and she got pregnant. Another one I know got an Infection from an IUD so I really am not for IUD's. I'm pregnant with my third child using birthcontrol so maybe I'll try tying my tubes and crossing my fingers because my Aunty got pregnant after tying her tubes..... so what is 100% NOTHING

I did it once and I will never do it again.
* You really have to check the strings It could get infected.
* If you didnt take it out after it is expired you possibly could get prego (My friend did only after 4.5 years, and the expiry date is 5 years so....)
* Inserting it and taking it out is very painful. I bleed for about a month and a half. And I took it out b4 the expiry date and it was very painful....took me 3 years to get pregnant. IF i just went on BC then I could have gotten prego faster!
It sucked for me, but remember its not always the same for everybody (Maybe Im just a wimp...but I had 2 children and i survived that...lol)

- yes, you do have to check them every moth, but you do it yourself at home. It takes less than 1 minute, and it's very simple

-It can harm your body if you leave it longer, but you can leave it in safely for up to 12 years. It's not hard to find 20 minutes in 12 years to have it removed

- Inserting hurt like hell for me, but I do not have children and have never been pregnant. The pain went away after 20 minutes and I've been fine ever since. If you have had children, it hurts a lot less (similar to menstrual cramps) since your uterus has been stretched.
I still have it in, so I do not know if removal will hurt for me, but everybody I know said that they did not feel the removal at all.
