Don't know why they say it!

It has nothing to do with the way you drink it, it is related to time, quantity and body weight.

The only thing I can think (had this discussion with my daughter last night!) is that it helps mask the flavor of the alcohol, leading you to drink more, faster.

It's an old wives tale. Alcohol in the bloodstream is what gets you drunk not the way you drink it.

There are other urban myths about drinking like:

Mixing your drinks gets you drunk quicker. WRONG, it's the amount of alcohol you drink that does that, whatever it's form.

Going into fresh air gets you drunk quicker. WRONG, again the only thing that gets you drunk is alcohol imbibing.

Diluting your drink slows you getting drunk down. WRONG. It may disguise the taste but does not alter the amount of alcohol you drink.

Drinking milk before you drink keeps you sober as it lines the stomach. WRONG. The stomach starts digesting it as soon as the milk gets there and nothing 'lines' your stomach.

Having a large meal before drinking keeps you sober. WRONG.It may slow the absorption down. but not for long.

They say that because people usually drink faster when using a straw. In the case of carbonated alcoholic beverages in particular (such as beer), drinking it through a straw may allow more of the carbonation to reach your stomach. Since carbonation speeds alcohol through the stomach wall and into the blood stream, any method that gets more carbonation into your stomach will get you intoxicated quicker.

I don't know, but it's an old wive's tale. You get drunk by ingesting alcohol. You will get just as much alcohol by sipping through a straw as you will drinking directly from the cup or can or bottle.

I drink any beverage, alcoholic or not, faster with a straw. Plus straws are just so darn fun! :)

I have no idea for sure, but my guess would be because when drinking with a straw, it goes down smoother, and easier. Therefore, you might be prone to drink more of it?

because sipping through a straw causes a vaccum like motion which gets to the stomach quicker than just downing in the hatch.. and just like when you guzzzle a slurpee you get a brain freeze.. same concept except you get a quicker buzz.

because of the amount of oxygen to your brain. when you use a straw you don't swallow air like you would if your drink straight from a cup.
