Recently, my best friend had surgery on his jaw, and his mouth will be wired shut for 6-8 weeks. He's already lost a good amount of weight and cannot afford to lose any more. We're looking for a diet that is of liquid or very thinly processed food with LOTS of calories. Any suggestions???

Malts instead of Milk shakes and add protein powder to them. GNC weight gain is also good. Chicken broth -- make it with fresh chicken WITH the skin (so you have the fat in the broth) - it won't taste any different, but will have extra calories.

I'm sure you've done protein shakes and smoothies, if not do them. Some solids blend well into liquids and some don't. I used to make these ridiculous post workout concoctions which had a scoop of vanilla ice cream, two raw eggs, milk and strawberry syrup blended together. That's damn good and damn high calorie. Otherwise I'd try herbed olive oil. I know it sounds gross but a little is quite tasty and fattening as hell. Or you could always try beer, it certainly helped my uncle pack on the pounds. Ooh! Ooh! Take a blender. Put in melted butter, syrup and pancakes, then blend to perfection. I might actually do that myself and I have an unwired mouth.

Milkshakes- add bananas and yogurt for extra substance. I had a friend who had her mouth wired shut for several weeks after dental surgery. She tried to eat lots and even some solid food after a couple of weeks like small amounts of apple sauce and pudding. She still lost weight so I think it is hard to avoid especially if he is in alot of pain and does not feel like eating. Try searching the web for shake and smoothy recipes so he doesn't get bored with the same ones. Also some of the instant breakfast shake mixes( like carnation) have extra calories in them. Read your lables and make sure he drinks full fat milk.

I'm sorry your friend had surgery. I hope he doing well and everything goes alright. I have a few suggestions to help out, and it's so nice of you that you care and you want the best for him. :) What you can do is this...I actually had to do this for awhile with braces and I came up with an idea. put soup that has meat, veggies, etc in a blender and mix it up. some will probebly taste wierd but others might not. ovisally heat it up like any other kind of soup.

Another suggestion is ENSURE or really really fattening smoothies.

If the reason for having your friend's mouth wired shut is the break of his jaw, chances are it may get fixed spontaneously, by itself, without wring or additional surgery. That happened to me 4 years ago. He could give it a try for one or two months, of course under medical supervision and antibiotics, if necessary.

Ensure. My uncle drank it when he was suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease.
