It will probably get orangey or coppery if you use an over the counter product, I am really cheap but my hair is one thing I think it's worth the money to go to a pro....it costs more but it's your hair and a pro can use the right products to get you the result you are looking for. good luck.

Sorry but that is not possible. The bleaching agent used to lighten hair is hydrogen peroxide, and it is used in almost all dyes, and every single dye that lightens. It is impossible to lighten hair without using hair dye with a bleaching agent in it. When someone "bleaches" their hair, they are talking about something done usually as a step before applying a blonde shade of hair dye, the "bleach" is simply a more concentrated amount of the hydrogen peroxide found in hair dyes and all blonde dyes, it is used in this concentrated amount when someone wants to lighten their hair significantly, such as making the transition between brown and blonde.

I do not recommend you do this alone. Home hair dying is okay if you have lighter hair (easier to dye) or if you dye using darker shades, but lightening is diffucult and should be done by a proffesional. They will choose the most flattering shade for you, there will be no unexpected results (such as turning out brassy or orangey), and they will be able to do it with the minimal damage to your hair, as they will know just the right concentration of peroxide to use for your hair.

You can probably dye your hair about a shade or two lighter.
If you want to do it yourself there are special hair dyes made specifically for dying lighter brown you can find them at walmart or i'm assuming drugstores.
I used one, i can't remember the name right now. but It dried out my hair quite a bit and it wasn't as shiny. Normally going lighter is harmful to your hair, even if you don't bleach.
Keep in mind that not all colors may be appropriate for you skin color. I for example make a ridiculous blond or redhead, and i look best in dark browns, but i can dye my hair black and it still looks natural. Because those colors wash out my skin.

If you don't want to bleach it they only other way is if you do a few dying treatments... especially if you're going for a blondish color, you would have to pick a light light blond so it will tint your hair, but it will show you on the box what color it will turn out.. i have like dark brown hair and i tried to do a champagne blonde, and it came out like a fiery bronze color, but i didn't dye it again.. so you would have to dye it twice, but you have to wait like 6-8 weeks in between to do it.. and it would have to be like semi or permanent dye so it would take long enough so you can get it the color you want the second time around.

you cannot do that (especially if u want it much lighter). even if you dye it with light light blonde. i have done it twice (using light light blonde) and it doest work. so i decided to bleach it. Don't worry. it is not as scary as u think.
