In October, 2004 it was announced that all generally-available Jack Daniel's products would thenceforth be bottled at 80 U.S. proof (40% alcohol by volume), which is the highest proof allowed in some jurisdictions; this will simplify the production process.

What you need to look for is a whisk(e)y that's labeled "Cask Strength." Whiskies are put into casks around 65-70% alcohol by volume (%ABV) which is 130-140 proof. Generally, whiskies are cut with water to 40-45% ABV before bottling, which is what you'll see mostly on the shelves. You have to go to a better liquor store that carries specialty spirits like vintage single malt Scotches and such.
