I know there are some clubs in the Silver Lake area and in Echo Park, which are next to each other. It's almost an underground type of thing that shifts. People are doing interpretive dancing to live bands who play alternative music as well.

Look in the papers or around local college campuses for "Poetry Slams"

Look in LA Weekly and other newspapers, or online for open mic nights. (A poetry slam is a little different) MySpace should be useful, too.
