Just bought myself a Canon 30D. I have an old Vivitar 2600D flash. Was wondering if it would be safe to attach the Vivitar to the Canon. And if it is safe, would it work properly. Anyone?

See if that flash is listed here:

If the shoe voltage is 6 volts or lower, it should be safe. You can also buy a device that Wein makes called a safe synch shoe which sits between the camera and the flash to protect the camera at Bhphotovideo.com. High voltage flashes can damage your camera.
There will be no ttl communication but you can put the camera in manual mode and shoot like you used to with the old thyristor flashes. It works just as well as it has for years.
