A chef's hat is a little strange looking I must admit. The altenative is a hair net. Thats what they are used for, to keep there hair from getting in the food. Any hair covering would do it's just part if the uniform. Kinda like a Policeman, Cowboy, Solder, Sailor, etc.

The chef's hat is used so Everyone knows WHO'S kitchen they are in...He's the boss,so no one laughs at his cooking or his hat...Now.
