Modern evolutionary studies depend a lot on DNA. You might consider something in the field of microbiology. Also paleontology would be useful, I think. You'd get the best information by contacting the advisors or professors in those departments at a good college or university, though. They would have a good idea in which area the cutting edge research is being done.
