My baby is getting baptised on sunday at our church. We have picked the godparents for her and i was curious as to how the rest of you picked your childrens god parents. Her godfather isnt exactly the person i would have chosen but he is my husbands close friend and he has 2 children of his own and is a good man but we dont really see him very often due to his work. I want my daughter to have a close relationship with her godparents. So im just curious! thanks!

Godparents should be a member of the family. They supposed to take the children in if something happens to you. Friends come and go but families are forever and sometimes you loose contact with friends but not with family. Pick a close brother or sister that will want to take them in to raise. Your parents would be too old to even want to do that. If a friend does end up raising them they could loose contact with the family altogether and that is not good for them. Godparent is not a legal position, and should the parents seriously intend the godparents to act as foster parents in case of their death, this must be legally specified through the usual means such as a will. ◄

A Godparent is typically used in Catholic and Episcopalian belief systems. They promise to raise the child in that particular faith if the parents cannot for some reason. However, I have never met anyone who takes this appointment seriously. Usually family members or best friends are chosen for the role. Sometimes a Minister or someone in a high capacity can also fill the role. However, they usually are members of the same faith as the child being baptized.

Godparents are supposed to be spiritual teachers for the children. I have never observed this. It seems like politics to me. According to the bible its the parents role to teach the children about God. The best way to do that is to lead by example. Have a daily family worship in the morning and evening.
