I understand your confusion. I am on here to try to figure out some things also about christians...so here is mmy answer.
I believe in evolution, and will make a very long story very short. Please just use this as a starting point, because it really is not this simplistic. I believe animal life started in the water then evolved into land life, and I believe humans are animals also. I believe plant life evolved from the soil.
As far as where it all started...I just don't know and I am not ashamed to admit it. Science hasn't figured out everything. There is a lot of research being done on it, and you can read more here http://origins.jpl.nasa.gov/index1.html

Even if you believe in God religion provides no answers to how we got here, the Adam & Eve story is just a metaphorical story as are all the other creation myths.
Truth is nobody has yet figured this one out but science is closing in on it.
Evolution and adaptation play a part after the initial primitive protozoan life form, and there are theories about how they may have begun on Earth or possibly even may have been seeded here by a process called Panspermia.
Panspermia entails microscopic life carried here along with space debris and meteorites from other parts of the galaxy, it would still leave the question how did life begin on those other planets? but it would solve the beginning of life on Earth question how we got here which is what you asked..

There was a movement that started with the ancient Greeks called ""natural philosophy." It was in opposition to mythical explanations. That thread runs through science in general, and has in turn modified even religious views. (For example, we know that Joshua did NOT "stop the sun" from going around the earth, regardless of what the scriptures imply.)
To make a long story short, this tradition has gradually resulted in a world-view that requires no supernatural forces to explain any aspect of the unverse.
One of the problems is that we tend to be sloppy in our thinking. For example, we make a big deal of "creation." We talk as if we know what it means. But do we? You'll read on here a lot of people talking about how: "Everything has to have a beginning and therefore somebody had to create it, like a watch needs a watchmaker." But in fact, if you think about what a watchmaker does, you'll soon realize there is no "creation" involved at all. The watchmaker merely assembles EXISTING materials. And that applies to every single object or process we see or can think of. So even though we thump our gums about creation, we haven't a clue as to what could possibly constitute it. Another way to say it is that "talk is cheap." Our models for "creation" are not about creation at all.
The short answer is I am here as the result of lawful natural events - many of which we know a lot and many of which we only know a little.

You start from the wrong premise!!!
Just why should we believe your God?
Why should life not appear and evolve?
It is not a problem for non Christians to live with the knowledge that we just appeared through evolution.
It is Christians who cannot cope with life without God to explain everything.
Just because you do not understand something does not mean there had to be a God to do it. Do you understand Jet engines? How a computer works? Did a man not invent them? But if you do not understand them then you fall back on God did it!!!!!
The simple fact is that non believers have a much better handle on life.

We dont know that yet. But just because there is an unknown doesnt mean that a mythical deity is the cause for life on earth.
Think about it.....you readily accept the notion that the Christian God is responsible for creation of humanity. But what about all the other Gods that have been in existence well before your God was "invented" - why cant they be responsible for the creation of life on earth? Because they dont exist, right? Well, neither does the Christian God.

As far as I can tell, most people believe in something...that there is something "else", that we came from somewhere, and maybe even we're going somewhere. It's not that people don't believe. It's that people are unsure who or what "God" is - "God", as an unknown entity, is undefined in their minds. Therefore you get people who believe in aliens that say they are atheists. But surely God, as an extra-terrestrial being, or a being that exists on another plain to ours, or perhaps all plains simultaneously, is a type of alien. :-D
Me personally, I believe there is a God that created this world, and other dimensions - "God created the heavens and the earth"; including everything we can and can't see........
Hope it helps!

The question of many atheists is that they don't believe in the christian god since what has been written is so contradictory and mostly myth that they shove down peoples throats.
Somebody started the ball rolling, but was it 10-15 billion years ago or was it trillions and trillions of years ago and it has been a big bang and collapse cycle going on over and over again.

To answer hauntedtreehouses, I would guess Adam and Eve would not have belly buttons. A belly button is scar tissue from where the umbilical cord was connected to the baby in the womb. Adam and Eve were made directly by God not in the womb but all the offspring from Adam and Eve do have belly buttons.
I do not believe humans are animals and therefore evolved from animals. Genesis reads that God made first man and woman directly from the dust - (elements of the earth)
But that is my belief based on Bible knowledge which carries a lot of weight with me.

As an Atheist I accept the idea that I will never have all the answers and I also reject the idea of an entity that does have all the answers. Because of that I'm heavily inclined toward evolution since we are seeing species continue to evolve today.

They believe in macroevolution over millions of years. That all creatures, including humans evolved from a single celled organism. Also, most probably would say that we evolved directly from apes or ape-like creatures. I am not an athiest but it is what they believe.
