i own a repair shop, and i always cross behind the car like you do,and i think that's the proper way to do it,i have never had an accident doing this so i guess were both right on the method of doing it,,but i cant find it in the drivers book ,and it really don't tell a clear answer on it,but you raise a good question, now that i think back on it ,there have been a few people almost hit doing this,so it makes you wonder,i usually just motion for then to go on before i do anything, because people here where i live don't always drive the best anyway,so i don't take any chances, but that's real good question, good luck i hope this help,s.,,and have a good thanksgiving.

But if you go past them, and they're assuming you're turning, they'll hit you anyway.
The best thing to do is to cautiously go into the intersection a bit and watch their tires and the speed of their car. If you are even the slightest bit unsure of whether they're turning or not, you can flash your headlights to let them know you're turning and it's ok for them to turn.
I never assume oncoming traffic is doing what their signal says they are LOL! I'd rather wait a few extra seconds until their intention becomes clear. Just like I don't ever go the moment I get a green light.
And yes, if you turn and they don't, you would technically be at fault. You could say they had their turn signal on, but good luck proving it.
Defensive driving RULES!

Wait till the oncoming car commits to the turn. If the other vehicle has there turning signal on and does not turn you are at fault. However if the other vehicle is in a turn only lane, and they do not turn or excessively speeding they will be held at fault. You should always wait for the other driver, and stay safe.

You should both cross in front of each other - thay way, your respective paths do not cross.
If you passed behind the other car, then you would pass over each others' intended pathway, which is many times more risky.
If you are turning left in front of another vehicle that is supposed to be turning left - but instead that vehicle continues straight and hits you - then that person is at fault in the accident.
You are correct.

You would cross in front of the car. If their signal is on and they go straight and hit you, it would be their fault.
If you are the only two cars in an intersection with no turn arrows, you have equal right of way. The priority would apply if the car you're facing is either going straight or turning right, then they would go first.

This happens to me a lot, and I've been driving for near 20 years. Especially in California, 2 people facing each other at a stoplight, both going to turn left by seeing blinkers, you GO when you have the chance.
What I hate is when I wait for someone to go straight while I'm trying to make a left, and then they do their left when I could have been making mine and the light changes on me!
Tell everyone you know to always use their blinkers! :)

You are perfectly right! Happy driving! Common sense tells that the oncoming car can complete the left turn ahead of you!

I've only seen people cross in front. Better yet, give the other a wave and let them go first.
