The stiff neck was most likely caused from the inflammation of his tonsils and lymph glands. The swelling may have put pressure on his neck causing the vertebra to slightly move and in turn made his muscles tighten. I know many people are not familiar with Chiropractic, but that would be my suggestion as to how to fix his stiff neck. They learn to administer any level of adjustment depending on the size of the person. If you aren't comfortable with the idea of Chiropractic, I would suggest lightly massaging the neck and using a warm compress or moist heat pack to help relax the muscles.
