It is the people misusing the doctrines and common sense that God gave them.

Have a lovely day!

I don't think that you can separate them entirely in this discussion.

IMO, there are people who need to make others wrong in order for them to feel right. This applies not only in matters of religion, but in every aspect of life.

My own suspicion is that such people are attracted to the most dogmatic religions, which support and reward this tendency.

I have wondered, on occasion, if it's not a chicken-and-egg thing; without wrong-making as a motivation for many religious people, would religions themselves become more accepting of the truths of others?

I don't know.

There's not much I can do about it, except to be responsible for my own actions and recognize myself as the source of wrong-making when I indulge in it, rather than hiding behind the precepts of a religion.

In any case, my own religion doesn't teach that it is the only right way. And that's a more comfortable fit for me than those that do; it is, in my opinion, also a more true statement about life, the universe, and everything. *smile*

I would say that it is both in some occasion. But most of the time it is the people. For example in Roman Catholic( this is the only one I know for sure, I don't know about others) it not good for you to be a homosexual, it is considered a sin. Yet you do not see them (at least meand other people I know) out there comdemning the people. They restrain them from doing certain thigns but they do not say or do hurtful things to them using the name of God.People sometimes use religion and their laws to do bad stuff. Everybody should Know that God is good. He knows we are not perfect and help us in His onw way. If a very religious person does somthing bad to us in the name of God, know that it not true, God is not cruel.

People. People are the corrupting factor in religion, business, science, charities... you name it.

But the good that's accomplished in the world is through people as well. The yin and the yang. We're capable of both great harm and great good. And usually the good that we do, we do when we shed selfish motives and seek something greater than our own benefit.

It is the deadly combination of both. Religion could be a salve to heal the wounds of mankind, or a sword to sever the ties of love and tolerance. All too often, it is used as a sword.
