I have had conflicting answers, as my friend was emailing me from Perth his email header said 05:00 am sat. But a colleague says that Perth is only 8 hours ahead.

Hi Carole,
The International Date Line sits on the 180 line of longitude in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and is the imaginary line that separates two consecutive calendar days.

Samoa is the first country to bring in the new year followed by Fiji, New Zealand then onto Australia.

When you say that you are 8 hours ahead you are in fact 8 hours ahead the day before or 16 hours behind Perth.

My guess is you are on the west coast of the USA and when your friend e-mailed you it was 5:00am Fri 17th Nov in Perth and your time was 1:00 pm Thr 16th Nov.

The only other thing I can work out is if 12:00 midday where you are and for the time to be 5:00 am in Perth you are in Alaska

Hope that helps you out

Perth is 8 hours ahead of us so at Midday it's 8 at night it does get confusing though as they don't have Summer time or winter time (Daylight saving) in Perth or on the Western coast. hope this helps

It is usually 8 hours if you are in the UK . If it is 5am their time you must be in the west of the USA as they would be 15 or 16 hours ahead depending which zone you are in. You should visit them , it's a beautiful place to holiday
