It led to the end of the Civil War by forcing the industrial might of the north to be aligned against the seccessionists. It was the provocation needed to bring the south back into the union fold. Without Sumter, the seccession would've continued for a longer period than the four or five years that it did.

Yah, i get the 10 points, everyone else commented how it started the war, and not how it led to the end of the war.

Fort Sumter was at the beginning of the Civil War!!!

On April 10, 1861, Brig. Gen. Beauregard, in command of the provisional Confederate forces at Charleston, South Carolina, demanded the surrender of the Union garrison of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Garrison commander Anderson refused. On April 12, Confederate batteries opened fire on the fort, which was unable to reply effectively. At 2:30 p.m., April 13, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter, evacuating the garrison on the following day. The bombardment of Fort Sumter was the opening engagement of the American Civil War. Although there were no casualties during the bombardment, one Union artillerist was killed and three wounded (one mortally) when a cannon exploded prematurely when firing a salute during the evacuation.

Fort Sumter was what President Lincoln was waiting for. He needed a good reason for war and, much like pearl harbor to WWII, the bombardment was the final straw. After that the nation rallied behind the war.

It was the key to make the south look bad, When Isolated Lincoln asked if Humanitarian supplies could be delivered, the south said no making them look bad. Lincoln then was able to re-supply and make the South the Agressor. This made all of the Middle of the road States keep back from joining the south.
