I did smoke pot up until I found out I was pregnant. As soon as I found out I quit smoking pot and cigarettes cold turkey, and I have not smoked since then. I'd rather not risk it and have something happen to my baby. He's more important than any of that! Even if people say it's ok...I still wouldn't risk it myself, just my opinion though.

Never smoked anything but cigarettes, only during 1 pregnancy. I knew a girl who was a crack head...and she actually had the nerve to continue smoking crack with 2 pregnancies!!! couldnt believe it!! she wasnt a friend, just a girlfriend of boyfriend's co-worker. both babies appeared to have no significant damage..unbelievable. i think more damage being done after they born..living in the situation. They may not even be with her anymore, they've been removed at least once before.

a friend of mine smoked pot with her pregnancy, and her baby was born with a clup lip and he was only 2 pounds 6 ounces when born, she has now stopped smoking pot and has a wonderful life with her 12 year old son now, her husband and she just gave birth to an 8 pound healthy baby girl, and now she knows what drugs can do to an unborn child. alcohol does the same thing, major drugs can make an infant deformed.

I grew up with a girl that is now pregnant, one of my friends that live next door to her told me that she is always smoking pot, she is nearly 8 months pregnant. I can't believe people could do something like this! I could not live with myself, and to think she is that selfish. Well, if something is wrong with her child when she's born, she'll regret it. Karma sucks, and it will come back to her. I just couldn't imagine doing something like that. Awful and pathedic!

Regarding unplanned pregnancies and women who abuse drugs, it is fairly common for the woman to use in the early few weeks of conception - simply because they are unaware of their pregnancy. The key is to get treatment and quit once she finds out she is pregnant.

Regarding pregnancy and smoking pot, here's some details. Getting pregnant is going to be harder in the first place. Usually, male partners abuse the same substances that their female counterparts do. In men, marijuana decreases testosterone, sperm count, and potency. Needless to say, not a winning combination for conception. Women who smoke marijuana have increased risk of abnormalities in ovulation and therefore more infertility.

many women overcome those hurdles. Then, they go on to have higher rates of spontaneous abortion, pregnancy complications, and problems with labor and delivery. Birth defects are associated with marijuana use. Fathers' use lead to higher rates of certain heart abnormalities. Mothers' use is associated with mutant lymphocytes--deranged immune cell factors--which could later lead to higher rates of childhood cancers.

Their newborns can experience mild withdrawal and some nervous system effects. And the toxic effects of pre-natal marijuana exposure is the gift that keeps on giving. Effects are often not readily apparent in newborns. Still, psychologists who have studied these babies have found neurological delays. Likewise, few negative effects are apparent between the ages of 1 and 3. But a woman shouldn't be fooled if she has heard of a study where the very young kids show no ill effects. Pre-natal marijuana exposure effects what are called "higher cognitive functions" which don't express themselves until later. At four years old, decreases in verbal ability and memory can be found in those kid exposed to pre-natal marijuana use. At ages 5 and 6, more problems with attention span are found. Needless to say, none of this sets the kid up for a great experience in grade school. At ages 9-12, the same problems persist and compound. Pre-natally exposed to marijuana kids have lower impulse control, don't do as well on certain types of analysis and reasoning tasks, and have lower reading and language skills.

So best advice--quit. Ideally, a woman and her partner should quit long before they try for conception. Should a woman find herself pregnant while still using, she should seek out a treatment program immediately. Quitting any substance abused is difficult, but pregnancy is the strongest motivator for women. There are treatment programs geared towards women, and some even geared towards pregnant women.

Absolutely not!!! That's a selfish act on the mothers part if she chooses to continue in those activities while pregnant. If someone can't go 9 months without something like that, then there is a problem.

I didn't find out with my first child until I was already 8 weeks along and I smoked during that period. As soon as I found out I quit though... My baby was perfect despite the secondhand smoke he had to inhale for the 8 weeks... I would never suggest for anyone to smoke during pregnancy.. if someone can't quit for 9 months for their child than they probably should have never gotten pregnant.. Good luck with the poll

I have never smoked pot and would not recommend it while you are pregnant! Here are a few articles I found.

What you need to know:
Pot and pregnancy don’t mix. Marijuana use can reduce fertility in both men and women, making it difficult to conceive. If you are pregnant, you need to know that marijuana crosses the placenta and can affect your baby. Marijuana use during pregnancy has been linked to low birthweight in the baby and withdrawal-like symptoms including excessive crying, and tremors (shaking). Some studies suggest that children exposed to marijuana while in the womb are at increased risk of attention disorders and learning problems later in life.

What you can do:
Stay away from marijuana before and during pregnancy. If you are already pregnant, there is no evidence that marijuana smoking in the past will harm your baby. You can try some of the suggestions for quitting smoking tobacco to help you stop smoking marijuana. If you can’t give up your habit by yourself, ask your health care provider for assistance

Smoking Marijuana While Pregnant May Harm Baby's Brain
March 25, 2003 -- Smoking marijuana during pregnancy may cause lasting behavioral and mental defects in the child. A new study in animals suggests that children who are exposed to marijuana in the womb may suffer from a variety of long-term problems even if they aren't born with obvious birth defects.

Researchers say that although marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug among women of childbearing age, little is known about the side effects of prenatal exposure to marijuana. They say previous studies have produced conflicting results because it's difficult to account for potential contaminants frequently found in marijuana and contributing effects of other drug and alcohol use.

In this study, researchers examined the effects of exposure to an artificial component of marijuana called WIN in the offspring of rats who received the synthetic cannabinoid while pregnant. The mother rats received a daily injection of the drug that was comparable to a low-to-moderate marijuana dose inhaled by a human smoker.

The results are published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers Giampaolo Mereu of the University of Cagliari in Italy, and colleagues compared how these marijuana-exposed offspring compared to others rats in terms of memory and motor activity. They found that the rats exposed to WIN in the womb were significantly more hyperactive than the other rats, but these differences diminished as the rats reached adulthood.

The effects of exposure on the rats' learning abilities were more long lasting. The WIN-exposed rats consistently scored lower than others on learning tests throughout their lives.

Researchers say they also found that WIN interfered with the release of a brain transmitter called glutamate, a key chemical associated with learning and memory processing.

Although these findings have not yet been confirmed in humans, the authors say these effects on brain chemistry and activity are consistent with existing data showing learning problems in children exposed to marijuana while in the womb.
