Is there anything in particular I need to know? I have outstanding traffic tickets here in Houston, is that going to stop me? Are they going to do a background check or anything?

Yes they do a background check but traffic tickets are not a problem. Only major felonies. You can go to any post office. Pick up a application, it costs around $90. You need to have 2 photos. You get your passport in about 2 weeks or you can pay extra for expedited service. What has changed is what you're allowed to bring onto airplanes. That changes quite often but not the passport process.

I just went to get mine a couple of weeks ago. All I needed was my driver's license and birth certificate.

If you are bringing a child overseas, they need to be present when you apply for the passport. Also, it takes 6-8 weeks to come back in the mail.

I know for sure that starting in January 2007 you will need a passport even for Canada or Mexico....

No, except that all Americans must have a valid passport to leave the USA even to places like Mexico, the Carribean and Canada.

this could nicely be a worry-unfastened false impression. If Al Qaeda worked like a significant government or something, consistent with threat this analogy could be suited, even with the indisputable fact that it is not. Al Qaeda operates on a "cellular" point, so operatives and small action communities purely prefer a message from somebody of their chain of command to turn on, they're often self-funded, via distinctive characteristic of being the two funded via some valid employer events the place earnings are funneled in direction of cellular activites OR with the aid of illict ability. the two way, this is how the Madrid and London operators have been functioning. the terrific thank you to examine it, is like Mc Donalds or 7-11 , the corporate headquarters might get nuked and the CEO ought to get killed, yet that would not rather influence the franchise proprietor in Chicago, ny or l. a.. it would quickly disrupt or disable their communications , and the "terrific case" could be to consistent with threat even decrease off a cellular from it particularly is command/administration, yet no longer something prevents a "status order" to turn on or disband the cellular in any such case, besides. because it stands there have been some public terrorist incidents (Anthrax in FL,CT,ny,DC & NJ, the thwarted aerosolized cyanide/sarin in NYC, The London bombers performed various useful "dry runs" in the ny subways - unbeknownst to place of start secure practices, and maximum at the instant the botched Ricin attack in Las Vegas.) and place of start secure practices has in reality caught up with various different communities or persons whom could or will possibly no longer have been making plans extreme assaults upon US landmarks or inhabitants centers.

I just got my passport. It was really simple. Birth certificate was all they wanted (they kept the original and then returned it with my passport). I also had to show them my SS card and drivers license. You can download the application on-line (just search passports)
I went to the post office and was in and out in 15 minutes.
~enjoy your trip~
