My brother is getting married next weekend. He thinks the dollar dance would humiliate his new bride. We were at a wedding last month and we saw the Italian tradition of cutting the grooms tie and selling the pieces to the wedding guests, and the money is given to the bride and groom. He really liked it, but would feel foolish as we are not Italian. I would like to come up with a few ideas for something like that as they are a young couple and it would be great if they were to recieve something to help with the honeymoon. Anyone have any good ideas?

Question .... why would this humiliate the bride? Just curious. The whole point of the dollar dance isn't for the $$$, it is for others to congratulate the couple via a short dance, this usually only lasts about 30 seconds with each person and goes for a couple of songs.

I have never heard of the cutting of the tie tradition and my Husband is 3rd generation 100% Italian ... trust me, I think that we had every other damn Italian tradition in our wedding! : )

You could have $1 shots for the bride & groom and people could pay for the shots and the $$$ would go to the bride and groom

There is another Italian tradition where the bride has a llittle silk purse that she wears during the reception, and everyone who dances with her knows to put some money in there. It's not llike the dollar dance though, because they're not paying to dance with her- they're just enjoying the pleasure of her company and giving the money as a gift. However, if not too many Italians are at the wedding, nobody might know what the purse is for unless you tell them in advance.

Here's another idea- maybe just your brother can do the dollar dance while his bride watches. I can understand how some women might feel the dollar dance is kind of a slave auction, but at my boyfriend's brother's wedding a few years ago, both the brde and the groom participated in it, and actually more people got in line to dance with the groom than the bride. Your brother could turn it into a really funny thing.

I know it's not QUITE Christmas yet, but at my friend's wedding last year her reception hall had a fireplace in it so her mom hung two stockings with the bride and groom's names on them and stuck some 20's on the edges of the stockings with clothespins. I'm not sure if the guests cought on though. Maybe a sign on the fireplace telling what the money was for would've helped...

More than likely they will receive money for gifts. I wouldn't do any dollar dance or anything else that didn't fit in my "culture". I went to a wedding one time, when out of no where the bride was "kidnapped" and they passed a basket around asking for her ransom money. Needless to say I didn't give any money, I felt it was very tacky. Oh and the Dad had a shotgun and the bride's dress was Holiday Barbie look a like...need I say more..lol.

My mom was at a wedding and wants us to do this at our rather than the $1 dance...

The groom carried a bottle of liquor and a small shot glass around and gave everyone shots for a $1 and teh bride ran around and gave everyone kisses on teh cheek. My mom said it was really cute.

But niether is necessary. They won't get ALL that much $ from this sort of dance. If the bride is going to be uncompfortable why do anything? But if she is compfortable with this idea, it is a cute one. At least I thought so!! good luck!

You can always do the dollar dance instead of your bride or you can both do it then the guests get to chose who they want to dance with. I've seen this done many times and the guests get a kick out of being able to dance with the groom.

instead of that, why don't they do the "who's been married the longest" contest. and who ever was married the longest get a small gift from the bride/groom...

They can use the money they received from their wedding for their honeymoon

The wedding gifts are not enough? The guests should not be expected to give more money in addition to what they already gave as engagment gifts, shower gifts, wedding gifts.
People budget the amount they can/want to spend and should not be expected to give more at the wedding.
I think that is a bad idea.

I don't think you can get away with that unless it is your cultural tradition to do so. Asking guests to hand over cash as well as gifts seems very vulgar and inappropriate. You don't want people to talk about your brother's wedding negatively for years to come, do you? Maybe if you had asked guests in advance for money gifts only... but again, not appropriate unless its your tradition.
