What were you taking it for.....sleep? There are no side effects when the dosage is low (for sleep, it's usually 50-150 mgs.)

If you were taking it as an antidepressant (which they don't really give it for that anymore because it takes WAY too high a dosage and there are better antidepressants out there these days) then you need to be weened off slowly--just like any other antidepressant.

But just for sleep? You'll be fine.

I seriously hope that you have stopped taking this medication under the direction of a doctor. And even then, it could be dangerous. About a year ago, one of the times that I was hospitalized the doctor decided to switch my meds. Instead of weaning me off of trazodone, she just completely stopped it and started something else. This was a REALLY bad thing to do. On the second night without it, I had a grand mal seizure and had to be taken to a regular hospital emergency room. It was very scary. Needless to say, the doctor put me back on the trazodone and I've been ok since then. I've been on it for just about 2 years now... please be careful.

How to Stop Taking Desyrel (trazodone): Your doctor should be recommending that you reduce your dosage by 50-100mg a day every 3-5 days if you need to stop taking it, if not more slowly than that. Based on the combined 8-15 hour half-lives.

According to this site (theroadback.com), here are some side effects of both the medicine and withdrawal:

"Withdrawal off antidepressants is often misunderstood. If you have tried to get off an antidepressant in the past, you might have tried skipping days, reducing the medication by 25% each week or any number of methods. You know the outcome of doing that if you tried already.

The Road Back is about solutions. Solutions for tapering off antidepressants and other medications and solutions to help you overcome existing antidepressant side effects if you happened to come off the drug not using The Road Back Program.

The Road Back Program guides you through whatever stage you are at.

The Road Back - How to get Off Drugs Safely (Second Edition) is coming in book form soon but we do not want to wait for the printer to make the updates available. The book will be free this time and we have placed most of the text on our Web Site.

If you are looking for how you can safely come off your antidepressant, if you are already coming off the antidepressant and are having a difficult time or if you have managed to not take the drug but are still suffering, click here and read what you can do to begin getting your life back once again.

If you are wanting to stay on your antidepressant but get rid of the antidepressant side effects, click here." (there's more...see site below).

Avoid many other sites offering relief to those withdrawing from anti-depressants; they're usually going to try to sell you some OTHER medication!

Good luck.

My wife tried trazodone along with several other sleep medicines for her ALS. She didn't like Trazodone at all. I would recommend requesting an alternative. In any case, you must take adequate water for medicines like this.

I couldn't sleep for a few nights but that is about all. I now only take 50 mg when I need to sleep and can't.
