OK here's the RIGHT answer. The yolk is food for the developing chick.

from http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/birds/info/chicken/egg.shtml

Growth of the Embryo: The fertilized blastodisc (now called the blastoderm) grows and becomes the embryo. As the embryo grows, its primary food source is the YOLK. Waste products (like urea) collect in a sack called the allantois. The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide gas occurs through the eggshell; the chorion lines the inside surface of the egg and is connected to the blood vessels of the embryo.

Have a look here: http://www.icr.com.au/~cps/embryology/parts_of_the_egg.htm and here: http://www.ext.vt.edu/resources/4h/virtualfarm/poultry/poultry_eggparts.html Basically, there is a small spot on the skin of a fertilized egg yolk called the Germinal Disc. The Germinal Disc will grow into the chick. As the chick grows it obsorbs the yolk as food.

The chick is attached to the yolk by sort of an umbilical cord just like animals to the placenta.

The yolk is the chick. The clear stuff is it's protection, and provides food before it hatches.
