I recently started giving my cat vaseline to help with his furballs. He now craves it and cries for it. Is this normal behavior? How much is too much to give him?

I used to have a cat that died at 16 years old. Anyway, every night when I went to bed, I would put vaseline on my lips. For some reason, my Jasper wanted some too. So for years, I would go to bed, put vaseline on my lips and jasper would jump up in the bed and want some also. I would give him some on my finger and he was happy.

This ritual probably went on for 14 of his 16 years. It didn't seem to hurt him, if it helped I don't know. All I know is that he expected it everynight and it definitely did no harm to him. I couldn't tell you how much, but I just put a little bit on my finger and he licked it off and was happy.

I don't see how vaseline could be bad for you. I heard that the guy who invented it ate a teaspoon or tablespoon everynight all his life and lived to be quite old.

I hadn't thought about it, but it probably does help with hairballs.

Vaseline On Cats

Vaseline is essentially the same thing as Laxatone which is used to help a cat with constipation.

The mineral oil coats the intestinal tract preventing the absorption of nutrients from the cat's food. It is not a good idea to use it regularly - only for three days to see if it will help with constipation.

Don't give your kitty Vaseline for hairballs.

Give him a little tiny bit of butter ~ let him lick it off of your finger. This will help the hirball slide down, rather than back out.

It will act as a laxative, like hairball gel. If you don't want the cat, give it to the shelter where it can be adopted by a loving caring owner
