Just like citric acid in some fruits which make it sour,a kind of acid is present in chillies that makes it taste hot.

Its not hot..ur tonque has no taste buds for spicey..its actually pain...the spicey feeling that you taste is actually pain...and chilli is hot because of its seeds inside it...if u take out those seeds and eat a chilli its not that hot ...mild taste of hot and thats pretty much it...

Spices that are added- as i n chili powder. My kids like it less so, so I add a bit of brown sugar or even pancake maple syrup (sounds weird but it works) and a big can of Pork and beans to just mellow it out---

The spices added.....I use cayenne pepper, black pepper,paprika...then I even use some hot sauce on top!!!! Yummy! The hotter the better!
